Change your Camera app settings
You can change your photo and video settings. For example, you can turn location stamps on or off, save storage space, and control dirty lens warnings. Learn how to open your Camera app.
Turn on features
Turn on flashTo turn on flash for brighter photos:
- Open the Camera app Google Camera.
- At the bottom left, tap Settings and then Flash .
Important: This feature is available on Pixel 5a and later, including Fold.
When you record video at a zoomed target, turn on Audio Zoom to boost sound and reduce other noise.
- Open the Camera app Google Camera.
- Switch to Video mode Open video mode.
- At the bottom left, tap Settings .
- Turn on Audio zoom.
- Open your Camera app Google Camera.
- At the bottom left, tap Settings and then More settings .
- Turn on Camera Coach.
- A screen with important information about Camera Coach will appear, please read carefully.
- To turn on Camera Coach, tap Turn on.
- To opt out of using Camera Coach, you can toggle off in Settings.

Troubleshoot issues with Camera Coach
Important:
- This feature only supports the rear camera.
- This feature works in default camera, Portrait, and Night Sight modes.
Grayed out Camera Coach icon
This can be caused if there’s no internet connection or if the Guided Frame feature is turned on.
To troubleshoot this issue:
- Make sure you have internet connection, either through cellular data or Wi-Fi.
- Make sure Guided Frame is turned off:
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Advanced and then Guided Frame and then Disable.
Slow internet connection
When the internet connection is too slow, a notification appears that says "Slow internet connection...". Attempts to connect to the internet will continue but will time out after 30 seconds. To resolve this issue, connect to a stable internet network.
Some modes don’t show Camera Coach
This feature is supported in the Default Camera, Portrait, and Night Sight modes. Make sure to only use it with these supported modes.
Error messages
- "Camera Coach cannot help with this scene" message: This can happen if the viewfinder is too dark, blocked, or the scene contains sensitive imagery. To resolve this, you can try to take photos of a different scene.
- "Something went wrong" message: Check your internet connection and try Camera Coach again.
On-screen instructions don’t follow phone orientation
When you switch to landscape mode, the on-screen instructions don’t rotate with the phone. This happens when the phone's auto-rotation is off. To fix this issue, make sure that auto-rotation is turned on.
- Open the Camera app Google Camera.
- At the bottom left, tap Settings and then More settings.
- Under "General options," tap Advanced.
- Turn on RAW/JPEG control.
Tip: This step isn't required on Pixel 8 Pro.
Turn on RAW
- In photo mode, at the bottom left, tap Settings .
- Turn on RAW + JPEG.
Use gridlines to straighten photos
- Open the Camera app Google Camera.
- At the bottom left, tap Settings .
- Tap More Settings and then Grid type.
- Select the type of grid you want.
Adjust the photo's ratio
- Open the Camera app Google Camera.
- At the bottom left, tap Settings .
- Select a ratio option:
- Wide crop (16:9)
- Full image (4:3)
Turn off sounds & warnings
Turn off dirty lens warningsYou may get a warning message if your camera senses that the lens is dirty. To turn off these messages:
- Open your Camera app Google Camera.
- At the bottom left, tap Settings and then More settings and then Advanced.
- Turn off Show dirty lens warning.
- Open your Camera app Google Camera.
- At the bottom left, tap Settings and then More settings.
- Turn off Save location.
Tip: To view a timestamp for any photo, in the bottom right corner, tap the photo and then More . If you leave location stamps on, you’ll also get the photo location.
Change storage settings
Reduce resolution to save storage spacePhotos
- Open your Camera app Google Camera.
- At the bottom left, tap Settings .
- Under "Photo," choose Full resolution or Medium resolution (Uses less storage).
Videos
- Open your Camera app Google Camera.
- Switch to Video mode Open video mode.
- At the bottom left, tap Settings .
- Next to "Resolution," select Full HD.

To find out how many photos and minutes of video you can take on your Pixel phone:
- Open your Camera app Google Camera.
- At the bottom left, tap Settings and then More settings and then Device Storage .
- Your remaining storage is detailed at the top of your screen.
- To optimize storage space: Turn on Storage Saver.
- To remove files: Tap Free up space.
