Edit your videos

In Google Photos, you can edit your videos with special effects, filters, and more from your mobile device.

What you need

Download and install the Google Photos app.

  • Some video editing features like crop, straighten, and filters are only available on Android devices with at least one GB of RAM that run on Android version 6.0 and later.

Edit your video

With our updated video editor, you can now have a refreshed editing experience with a streamlined layout and new and improved tools on the scrollable action bar.

Enhance or stabilize your video
  1. On your Android device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Open the video you want to edit.
  3. Tap Auto.
    • To improve the color and lighting in your video: Tap Enhance.
    • To stabilize your video: Tap Stabilize.
  4. To save a copy of the video with your edits, at the top, tap Save.
Export or trim a still from your video
  1. On your Android device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Open the video you want to edit.
    • To trim the video to a different length: Touch and hold, then drag the trim handles to select the portion of your video you want to keep.
      • To save a copy of the video with your edits: At the top, tap Save.
    • To export a frame from your video: Tap Export frame.
Crop or rotate
  1. On your Android device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Open the video you want to edit.
  3. Tap Crop.
    • To crop the video to a different aspect ratio, like a square: Tap Aspect ratio .
    • To rotate a video 90 degrees: Tap Rotate .
      • To make minor adjustments to straighten the video: Use the dial above Rotate .
    • To automatically straighten the video: Tap Auto.
      • Tip: Auto straighten availability depends on the video.
    • To mirror the photos and videos horizontally: Tap Mirror .
  4. To save a copy of the video with your edits, at the top, tap Save.
Adjust your video

Important: Your device must have at least 3 GB RAM and Android 8.0 and up.

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Open the video you want to edit.
  3. Tap Adjust.
  4. Select the type of effect you want to apply to your video and move the dial to make changes.
  5. When you’re finished, tap Done.
  6. To undo an adjustment, deselect the option or tap Cancel.

Video adjustments

  • To adjust the exposure, tapBrightness.
  • To adjust the difference in tones, tap Contrast .
  • To adjust the brightest value, tap White point .
  • To adjust the detail in the brightest areas, tap Highlights .
  • To adjust the detail in the darkest areas, tap Shadows .
  • To adjust the darkest value, tap Black point .
  • To adjust the intensity of colors, tap Saturation .
  • To adjust the color temperature, tap Warmth .
  • To adjust the hue, tap Tint .
  • To adjust the saturation of the skin-colored tones, tap Skin tone .
  • To adjust the saturation of the blue tones, like sky or water, tap Blue tone .
  • To reduce the brightness around the edges of the video, tap Vignette .
  • To enhance brightness and contrast across the video, tap HDR effect .
Add an effect or filter

Important: Your device must have at least 3 GB RAM and Android 8.0 and up.

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Open the video you want to edit.
  3. Tap Filters.
    • To add a filter:
      1. Tap Filter .
      2. Select a filter.
        • To change the strength of the filter on the video: Move the dial.
        • To undo a filter: Tap None.
    • To add an effect:
      1. Tap Effect .
      2. Select an effect.
        • To undo an effect: Tap None.
  4. Tap Save.

Tip: Types of effects include:

  • B&W Film
  • Light leak
  • Lomo
  • Dust mix
  • Chromatic
  • Fish Eye
Change the audio of your video

Important: This feature is only for Pixel 8+ devices.

  1. On your Pixel device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Open the video you want to edit.
  3. Tap Audio.
    • To mute your video: Tap Mute.
    • To delete the audio of your video: Tap Audio Eraser.
  4. To save a copy of the video with your edits, at the top, tap Save.
Mute your video

Important: This feature is only for non-Pixel devices.

  1. On your non-Pixel device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Open the video you want to edit.
  3. Tap Mute.
Change the speed of your video
  1. On your Android device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Open the video you want to edit.
  3. Tap Speed.
  4. To select a portion of your video to change the speed, touch and hold, then drag the trim handles.
    • To speed up your video: Tap 2x or 4x.
    • To slow down your video: Tap 1⁄4x or 1⁄2x.
  5. To save a copy of the video with your edits, at the top, tap Save.
Add music to your video

Important: To add downloaded music to your video, allow music and audio access for Google Photos app from Settings.

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Open the video you want to edit.
  3. To add music to a single video, tap Audio and then Add Music .
    • Alternatively, if you scroll beyond the fold,tap Music .
  4. To upload a song from your device and choose the song you want to add, tap On device.
  5. Choose the section of the song you want to use for your video.
    • To find the section of the song you want to use for your video, touch and hold, then drag the segment right or left.
  6. Tap Done Done.
  7. To edit the song you added, tap Music .
    • To change the section of the song you want to use: Tap Section .
    • To change the volume of "Video audio" and "Soundrack:"
      1. Tap Volume .
      2. Touch and hold, then drag the trim handles.
      3. Tap Done Done.
    • To change the song you want to use: Tap Change .
    • To remove the song from your video: Tap Remove Remove photo and then Remove.
  8. To save a copy of the video with your edits, at the top, tap Save.
