Requirements
To make bulk edits with the image editor, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:
If you don’t have the options to create generated images in Google Ads using your own prompts, check that you are using the Google Ads interface in one of the currently available languages (English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, German, Italian, and Japanese) and that your account:
- Is active and has been running ads for at least 30 days
- Has a history of policy compliance
- Has not completed Election Advertising Verification
- Is not advertising in a sensitive vertical (for example, sexual and political ads)
If your account is newer, you may still notice automatically suggested generative images to review when creating certain campaigns even if you can't use your own prompts.
Image generation capabilities are rolling out gradually to eligible advertisers, so these features may not be available to you yet, even if you’re otherwise eligible.
Benefits
- Efficiency while editing: You can use the image editor to quickly apply background or object addition edits to up to 100 images at the same time.
- Flexibility: You can apply a single edit or combine background replacement and object addition in whichever order you’d like.
- Seamless reviews and management: You can easily initiate bulk editing, review generated images, identify failures, regenerate images, and view the status of your edits directly from the asset library.
How it works
Bulk editing streamlines your work by allowing you to apply the same generative AI edits to a large batch of images at the same time. You can choose to replace the background, add a new object, or perform both actions during the same editing session.
Example
After generating, you can review all the images, regenerate any that didn't turn out as expected, and save the final assets to a new folder in your asset library.
Instructions
Follow the steps below to edit your images in bulk.
1. Start a bulk editing session
Follow the steps below to start an editing session from the AI image editor start page.
- Go to Asset library within the Tools menu Tools Icon.
- Select the blue + New button, hover over "Image", and select Generate and edit with AI.
- At the bottom of the AI image editor start page, select Edit multiple images.
- An image picker will open. Select up to 100 images you want to edit. You can select images from your asset library, including product images from a linked Merchant Center account.
- Click Select to load your images into the editing workspace.
2. Edit your images
After your images are loaded into the workspace, you can apply edits using the panel on the right. You can choose one, or both, of the following actions in any order.
Replace a background
- In the editing panel, select Replace background.
- In the text box, describe the new background you want to generate. For example, "a cozy living room with a fireplace" or "a minimalist studio setting with soft lighting".
- Select Generate. Google AI will begin generating and applying a new background to all selected images.
Add an object
- In the editing panel, select Add new object.
- In the text box, describe the object you want to add. For example, "a small yellow flower" or "a steaming coffee mug".
- Note: You don't need to specify the position of the object. Google AI will automatically determine the best placement for the object in each image. If you do specify a position, for example, "add a cat to the left of the sofa", Google AI will respect it if it makes sense in the context of the image.
- Select Generate. Google AI will begin adding the object to all selected images.
3. Review and refine your edits
As your images are generated, a progress bar will appear in the right-hand panel, and your image thumbnails will populate upon completion.
Stop generation
While your images are generating, you can select the Stop button in the right-hand panel and the generation process will halt. Only the images that finished generating up to that point will be available. You can choose to apply and save this completed subset or exit the session without saving. Incomplete sessions won’t be saved.
Apply your edits
After generation is complete, you must select the blue Apply button in the right-hand panel. This confirms the changes to your images. After application, you can either proceed to another bulk editing action like adding an object, or move on to save your images.
Review your images
You can take the following actions to review the images generated in the image editor.
- Undo/Redo: Use the Undo and Redo arrows at the top of the workspace to revert or re-apply your last bulk action.
- Preview an image: Select any thumbnail to view a full-screen, non-editable preview. Use the arrows to navigate through your batch of images.
- Leave feedback: To provide feedback on an individual image, hover over its thumbnail, select the 3-dot icon , then select Provide feedback.
- Handle failed generations: Sometimes, an image may fail to generate due to a policy check or technical issue. Failed images will be outlined in red in the main view.
- Select the Failed to generate tab at the top of the workspace to view all of your failed images at the same time.
- To fix a failed image, you can either:
- Regenerate it: Hover over the failed image and select the Regenerate image icon.
- Remove it: Hover over the image and click the Red X icon icon to remove it from the session.
4. Save your images
After you’re satisfied with your edits, you can save the images to your asset library.
- Select the blue Save button at the bottom of the page. A dialog box will appear, prompting you to name a new folder for these images. This helps keep your edited assets organized.
- Enter a folder name and select Save and close.
Your newly edited images will be saved as new assets in the specified folder within your asset library. The original images won’t be modified.
Manage incomplete sessions
You can choose between the following options to manage incomplete sessions.
Leave and continue in the background
You can select the X icon Red X icon at any time to leave the AI image editor. A dialog box will ask if you want to Stay or Leave. If you choose to Leave, the generation will continue in the background.
Access your session
Any incomplete bulk editing session will appear on the AI image editor start page under "Bulk edited images". You can have up to 5 incomplete sessions saved at one time.
If you have 5 active sessions, the option to start a new bulk edit will be turned off until you complete or delete an existing session.
Important: You’ll need to save your generated images to ensure that they remain in your asset library.
- Expiration: Unsaved sessions are stored for 14 days. After 14 days, your unsaved images will be deleted.
- Saving required: To permanently keep your generated images, you must return to the session within 14 days and follow the steps to save them to your asset library.
Generative image safety in Google Ads
We’re committed to upholding our principles for developing generative AI technology responsibly and at the highest standards for fairness, privacy, and security. We’re taking multiple steps to be both bold and responsible with helpful generative AI tools in Google Ads.
For example, Google AI is designed to not automatically suggest generative images for sensitive verticals, such as political or pharmaceutical ads. Note that in addition to limiting the use of Google's AI for political campaigns, Google Ads Policy requires disclosure of manipulated media uploaded from any third-party tools for certain political ads.
All advertising content is subject to Ads Policy, regardless of how it’s created, and generative AI content is held to the same set of content standards, reviews, and enforcement for any policy violations, including inappropriate content and misrepresentation.
All images generated by Google Ads include mechanisms that allow them to be identified as generated, such as an open-standard markup that will surface on tools like Google Image Search, as well as a SynthID, which is an imperceptible, digital watermark that is resistant to manipulations of the image, such as screenshots, filters, and compression.
We take privacy and security seriously, and any information you provide to Google to create ads, including generative AI, is treated in line with our Google Ads Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy.
Note that generative AI is an experimental technology, and may display inaccurate or offensive content that doesn’t represent Google’s views. Don’t rely on generative AI features in Google Ads for medical, legal, financial or other professional advice. As this technology evolves, we’re continuously evaluating and improving our approach to safety.
