Use tab groups with your keyboard

You can organize tabs into groups with your keyboard.

Create a tab group

To create a tab group:

  1. Open the tab menu.
  2. Select Add tab to new group.
  3. Give the group a name.
  4. Press Enter.

Open the menu for tab groups

Windows

  1. On your Windows computer, open Chrome.
  2. To move to tab selection, press F6 until your tabs are in focus.
  3. To switch focus to a specific tab, press Tab to move forward or Shift + Tab to move backward.
  4. To open the tab group menu, press Menu Menu.
  5. To make a menu selection:
    • To move up or down, press Up arrow Up arrow or Down arrow Down arrow.
    • To move left or right, press Left arrow Left chevron or Right arrow Right arrow.
    • To select a menu option, press Enter.

Chromebook

  1. On your Chromebook, open Chrome.
  2. To move to tab selection, press Ctrl + Tab.
  3. To switch focus to a specific tab, press Ctrl + Back or Ctrl + Forward .
  4. To open the tab group menu:
    • Press Search + Shift + Increase volume .
    • You can also press Launcher + Shift + Increase volume .
  5. To make a menu selection:
    • To move up or down, press Up arrow Up arrow or Down arrow Down arrow.
    • To move left or right, press Left arrow Left chevron or Right arrow Right arrow.
    • To select a menu option, press Enter.

Mac

  1. On your Mac, open Chrome.
  2. Make sure you have VoiceOver turned on.
  3. To move to tab selection, press Tab.
  4. To switch focus to a specific tab, press Tab to move forward or Shift + Tab to move backward.

Add or remove tabs from a group

To add a tab to a group:

  1. Open the tab menu.
  2. Select Add tab to group and then the name of the tab group.

To remove a tab from a group:

  1. Open the tab menu.
  2. Select Remove tab from group.

Move, collapse & expand tab groups

You can collapse a tab group so that only the group name or a colored circle shows. You can also expand a tab group so that all tabs show.

To collapse or expand a tab group:

  1. Switch focus to the tab group header.
  2. Press Space bar or Enter.

Tip: When a tab group is collapsed, you can only select the group. You can't select individual tabs inside the group.

To move a tab or tab group:

  1. Switch focus to the tab or tab group.
  2. Press Ctrl + Left arrow Left chevron or Ctrl + Right arrow Right arrow.
