Summarize chats in Google Chat

If you're a Google Workspace user, conversation summaries are now automatically available by default in spaces with many read and unread messages. Some users can use Gemini to request summaries for read and unread conversations in Home.

Turn conversation summary on & off in Google Chat

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings .
  3. Scroll to "General."
  4. Turn Conversation Summaries on or off.

Turn conversation summary on & off in Gmail

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open Gmail .
  2. Tap Menu and then Settings .
  3. Select your account.
  4. Scroll to "General."
  5. Check or uncheck the box next to "Conversation Summaries."

Use Gemini summaries for read and unread conversations

Important:

You can use Gemini to show summaries for read and unread conversations that include 1:1 direct messages, group direct messages, spaces, and threads. Summaries aren't available for:

  • Messages with apps
  • Conversations with history turned off

Tip: To enable conversation and space summaries in Home, turn on smart features in Gmail.

Summarize read or unread conversations in Home

You can choose to summarize a specific read and unread conversation in Home.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app or Gmail app .
    • In Gmail: At the bottom, tap Chat .
  2. To summarize, touch and hold a conversation.

Summarize unread messages in a conversation

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app or Gmail app .
    • In Gmail: At the bottom, tap Chat .
  2. Choose a conversation with unread messages to summarize.
  3. Tap Summarize unread.
    • Under the "Recent discussions" section, you can find a summary list of your recent unread messages.
  4. Tap Close summary.

Tip: For conversations with many unread messages, summaries automatically expand without the need to tap.

Give feedback about Gemini conversation summaries

Google Workspace with Gemini is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request.

If you get a suggestion that's inaccurate or that you feel is unsafe, you can submit feedback.

  1. At the bottom of the generated output, tap Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
  2. Optional: If you select Bad suggestion :
    1. In the pop-up window, tap Get Started.
    2. Write your feedback.

A notification summary on your Android device is a summary view of unread messages generated by Gemini.

Important:

Feature availability

  • This feature is available as part of the Gemini Alpha.
  • Your administrator controls access to the Gemini Alpha. If you can’t find these features, your administrator may not have Alpha features enabled for your organization

With this feature:

  • You still get the usual message notifications.
  • When your unread message notifications reach a specific count, you may see a summarized notification.
  • When you expand your notification summary for a particular conversation, you get the complete summary and the message content is excluded.
  • You can disable Notification Summaries. To turn off:
    1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app .
    2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings .
    3. Under the "Notifications" section, find "Notification Summaries."
    4. Turn off Notification Summaries.
      • By default, it's on.
