Change your car's Assistant settings

With Google Assistant built into your car, you can choose a language and turn on voice commands or personal results.

Important: Settings and functionality may vary by car manufacturer, region, and data plan. For more info, reference your owner’s manual.

Turn personal results on or off

When you turn on Personal results, destination and media recommendations appear on the car display. Anyone in the car can view, tap, or act on them.

  1. Tap your car display home screen.
  2. Go to your apps.
  3. Tap Settings Settings and thenGoogle and then Google Assistant.
  4. Turn on or off Allow personal results.

Important: The personal results setting does not control Assistant features provided by third party apps like Spotify or Pandora. Learn more about what happens when you turn on Personal results at Google privacy policy.

Change language settings

Important: In cars with Google Assistant built-in, you can set one primary language. Set your Assistant language to match your car’s system language.

Assistant features are not available in all countries and languages.

  1. Tap the car display home screen.
  2. Go to your apps.
  3. Tap Settings Settingsand then Google and then Google Assistant.
  4. Tap Languages and then choose a language.

Turn voice settings on or off

  1. Tap the car display home screen.
  2. Go to your apps.
  3. Tap Settings Settings and then Google and then Google Assistant.
  4. Turn on or off Say "Hey Google."

Change your app preferences

When you talk to Google Assistant built into your car, your queries are routed to your default apps and preferences. You can change your preferences in your Assistant settings.

Important: Apps that do not support integration with Google Assistant will not appear as an option.

Change your default navigation app

  1. Tap the car display home screen.
  2. Go to your apps.
  3. Tap Settings Settings and then Google and then Google Assistant.
  4. Tap Default navigation app.
  5. Select an application.

Change default music app

To change the default music app your Google Assistant uses in your car, you must adjust your Assistant settings on your phone or tablet.

For Android devices

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. Tap Music.
  3. Choose a music service.

For iOS devices

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Assistant app Assistant (iOS)​.
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile image or initial and then Services and then Music.
  3. Choose a music service.

Change news preferences

To choose your news preferences or change your news playlist format for Google Assistant in your car, you must adjust your Assistant settings on your phone or tablet.
Important: The news playlist format feature is only available in the US.

For Android devices

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings."
  2. Tap You > News.
  3. You can:
    • Add or remove news sources.
    • To decide which news sources you hear first, tap and hold the news source you want and drag it to the top.
    • To decide which news format you prefer, tap Change news playlist format.

For iOS devices

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Assistant app.
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial > Settings.
  3. Under "You," tap News.
  4. You can:
    • Add or remove news sources.
    • To decide which news sources you hear first, tap and hold the news source you want and drag it to the top.
    • To decide which news format you prefer, tap Change news playlist format.
