Update to Healthcare and medicines policy (June 2023)

In June 2023, the Google Ads Healthcare and medicines policy will be updated to clarify restrictions around prescription animal medications that are not prone to human abuse or other misuse. Currently, advertisers can use a small set of pre-approved prescription animal drug terms in ads that target personalized advertising audience segments, like remarketing lists. With this update, in line with the Personalized Advertising policy, advertisers will be able to use prescription animal drug terms where the drugs and listed ingredients are intended for animal use and are not prone to human abuse or other misuse.

This update will retain existing restrictions on prescription animal drug terms under the Healthcare & medicines policy:

Restricted animal drug terms

For campaigns targeting Canada or the United States, Google restricts the use of prescription animal drug terms when the drugs are intended for animal use and are not prone to human abuse or other misuse. Animal prescription drugs that are prone to human abuse or other misuse are subject to the Restricted Drug Terms policy. While you do not need to be certified in order to serve your ads, you must be certified in order to keyword target animal prescription drug terms in Canada and the United States—see how to apply.
