SETX has two problems: it auto-expands names like %APPDATA%, and it can truncate the new path string at 1024 characters. The first is unavoidable; otherwise %PATH% itself wouldn't be expanded. But it means if some reference changes, it won't be reflected in the Path variable. The second potentially erases history you may be unable to get back, unless you regularly backup your registry. Even then, it may be a challenge to remember /when/ it happened. | |

Do not use setx with the PATH variable. It can truncate your path irrecoverably.
