short changing by ash

You may be interested in the following differences in behaviour
between bash and (a)sh. ash comes up with one character less.

 $ a=${v%%/*}
 $ echo $a
 a12
 $ exit
 bash-2.02$ v=a123/b123.mak
 bash-2.02$ a=${v%%/*}
