Beta 18 an shell pipe (text/binary) mode?

I had a some problems with the runtime version of 17.1
and was wondering whether or not it was fixed.
In 17.1 shell pipes (|) were opened in text (as apposed
to binary mode). This killed stuff like gzip | tar.
Has this been changed (perhaps a config option added)?
