Scriptographer Workshop #4

Selected results from the fourth Scriptographer Workshop at ECAL in Lausanne, held by Jonathan Puckey and Jürg Lehni.

During one week, the students who worked in groups of two to four were taught basics in vector geometry and a simple, limited vocabulary of scripting drawing tools in Scriptographer. The aim was to produce a family of tools that have their origins in clearly defined visual worlds or topics, imitating and automating some of their key characteristics.

The workshop focused on one of the strengths of Scriptographer: The combination of a manual process with automated, script driven tools or processes. Another criteria was that of non-repeating patterns: A manually guided automated script is able to produce visual results that have their own language and resemble printing patterns without simply repeating elements on a regular grid, by repeating logic instead that has an impact on the resulting lines.

By limiting the students to using only black and white and not allowing libraries of predefined drawings, the workshop's focus was aimed at learning an intuitive way of using simple vector geometry and vector algebra in the composition of vector paths and outlines, by using points and vector objects and algebraic operations in a way easy to understand for visually thinking persons.

Glads

Glads is a series of three large-scale artworks depicting life through the medium of targeted Google ads. Life events become a point of barter. People become commodities.

After building an engine to cultivate Google's keyword based ads, Scriptographer was used to turn greyscale raster images into an abstracted mosaic of adverts. The resulting details are variously dark, funny, tangential and trite.

Jonathan Puckey designed the website of Lectoraat Kunst en Publieke Ruimte. The website visualizes the use of a website as public space.

Every time someone clicks on a link, they leave behind a small trace in the form of a graphical icon related to the category that the link belongs to.

To announce the launch of the website, Jonathan Puckey designed a card visualizing each click that had been perfomed up until that time.

Using Scriptographer he was able to retrieve the information about the 10470 clicks from the website's MYSQL database and convert it into a vector based visualization ready for offset printing.

IN FOCUS

IN FOCUS is an ongoing project with international artists, whose work refers to the Middle East from their own cultural, social, historical and political contexts.

Roel Wouters, Jonathan Puckey and Luna Maurer were approached to design a catalogue for a series of exhibitions in London in 2007.

Using Scriptographer they analyzed the text of the interviews that would be published in the catalogue and generated grids based on the use of punctuation in the questions and answers.

These grids were printed out and used as templates to draw speech bubbles, generating a direct visual visualization of how things were written in the interviews.

Drawing Typologies

Publication on the occasion of the exhibition Drawing Typologies, Proposal for Municipal Art Acquisitions in the Stedelijk Museum CS, June- September 2007.

This publication is designed by Luna Maurer making use of Text Pencil, a Scriptographer typographic drawing tool developed by Jonathan Puckey.

Luna Maurer: "It is an investigation in how we can use new technological developments in order to make the design more human, direct and that leaves space for imperfectness. By drawing all the texts of the catalogue by hand (with this tool) the whole book receives the character of a living organism. It also shows the possibilities of combining technology and the notion of 'handmade' (or drawing with its directness) in new ways."

Hektor Interface

Scriptographer is used to drive Hektor, to Spray-Paint Output Device.

The motion paths are calculated by a geometric algorithm to dampen the movements of the instable installation.

Script Letterer

Jonathan Puckey created a drawing tool that takes a text, places a letters of a especially design typeface and lets the user modify parameters of each letter. The aim was to explore half automated, half manual design processes.

Scriptographer was used to produce a limited edition of posters for the Swiss artist Philippe Decrauzat.
The effect is inspired by the 3D type on the «Faust» record sleve «The faust Tapes» from 1973.
Programming and design by Jürg Lehni. Due to the Philippe Decrauzat's decision, the script is not going to be shared here.
