What about cell phone compatibility?

I found this at the RunBASIC site:

"Run BASIC applications work on Windows, Linux and Mac computers and many cell phones".

So does this mean that websites created with Run BASIC are not accessible or usable to some (or many) smart phone users? And if not, will future versions be more compatible with cell phones? After all, cell phone users probably make up the largest number of internet users and potential website customers.

Another related question specifically for Carl: How long do you project before the next version of Run BASIC might be released?

FWIW - The only "issue" I've come across that's cell-phone related is I've had trouble uploading files from Android into an RB App even though my app works fine went sent a file via desktop browsers. The file appears to begin the transfer but hangs. Oddly on the server side the file does show up in-tact. Admittedly I did not put a great deal of effort debugging.. was more of an experimental idea.

I'm considering creating a local website for residents and tourists of my rural county. One major feature would be classified ads / barter / swap section. The ability for users to upload photos would be critical for that.

My aspirations were similar... I was toying with the idea of making a Twitter/Facebook clone.. mostly for the fun of it. Glad to see I'm not the only one still toying around with RB.. have to admit though, I'm very apprehensive about committing too much into it since we haven't heard from Carl in quite a while now. Sooner or later I fear one of these Windows update will break RB and there will be nobody around to fix it.

Like you, I'm a old school die-hard BASIC guy but with each project I consider biting the bullet and fully learning PHP or Python.

I haven't purchased a Run BASIC license yet, but I'm pretty sure Carl plans to come back to Run BASIC when he finishes the first stable version of Liberty BASIC 5. I figure it will probably take me at least that long to develop some of the apps I have in mind. So if I can get some information about the current capabilities for what I want to do, along with maybe a little info about what the next version might look like; and if I'm able to build my classified ads app to a certain point I might just dive in and get the license so I can start testing.

I can pick up an old 32 bit laptop or PC for my first server. And if all goes well I can kick off the website I've been dreaming about building for years now. I have some PHP skills, but not enough to do what I want to do. And you're right, I'm an old die hard BASIC guy. I really want to make this work. There are quite a few things on my Run BASIC wish list, but I'm willing to live with those issues for now until the new version comes out. My biggest beef is no word-wrap in the textarea widget, but I'm guessing that will be addressed in the next version.

Some people will probably say, "why reinvent the wheel" since there's Facebook swap groups and Craigslist. But I have serious issues with both of them. Facebook is fairly easy to post an ad to, but it sucks for buyers trying to find local items. Craigslist is fairly convenient for the buyer, but the seller interface doesn't work very well.

I want to make something that is local so you're not constantly clicking on items that are located somewhere out in Timbuktu, and well classified so that items are easy to find. My county doesn't have a huge population so I probably won't have to use tons of bandwidth. At least not at the start. If it gets big enough I should be able to monetize it at least enough to pay for either a VPN or hosting at Runbasichosting.com. If I put most of the static content on my current web hosting it will cut down on some of the RB bandwidth issues because only the people that need the dynamic RunBASIC apps will be using RB bandwidth at a given time. The rest will be using the static pages at my current hosting service. The site (sanilac.countymi.net) will be about a lot more than just the classified section. It will be a portal for everything Sanilac County with lots of articles and links to other local websites, business directories, history, tourism etc.

Like I say, I really want this to work because I'm not ready to spend the next year or two constantly studying PHP, Ajax and Java script. Making these apps using BASIC I should be able to have a rough version working in a matter of months or weeks instead of years. And I think that's the whole idea of Run BASIC. :)
