How to host my own site

I would love to use RUNBASIC as a standalone server for a couple of websites, but the problem is; it doesn't work on the newer versions of Ubuntu and Ubuntu derivatives. I had the free version working a few years ago on an older version of LINUX, and I really loved the concept. It's something I'd really love to purchase and use because I'm pretty good at LibertyBASIC, and the learning curve wouldn't be that bad. This is something that's been bothering me for awhile because I had planned on getting the regular server version and using it for some website ideas I have. Is the regular server version different? Does it work on the latest kernels?

What I would like to do is try using my Raspberry PI as the server. Is there a Raspberry PI system that RUNBASIC works on?

RB linux version running here on Mint 18.1 Cinnamon 64bit(Ubumtu based)
I had RB running on PCLinuxos for several years.

RB cant run on the Pi because of the architecture (ARM) so it will only run on x86 BUT...
have a read here and you may get the windows version of RB to run

That's odd. I've tried it on Mint 18, Ubuntu (whatever their latest version was about a year ago) and now on Linux lite, and I can't get it to do anything.

If I remember correctly the last version of Ubuntu I was able to run it on was the one before Tahr.

I have been working on some ideas for a site that I would really like to make. I may be asking some questions in the forum in the near future, and if I can work out everything I'm trying to do with it, I'll probably get it and run it on an old computer that will run an earlier version of RB.

I'm currently playing around with it in a Virtual XP machine.

Remember that Run BASIC is a 32-bit application. Newer Linux distros often don't run 32-bit apps out of the box. You need to install 32-bit support for them to work.

I ran into similar problems. I ran RB quite successfully on a Gentoo 32 bit server for a long time. Then after an update RB would always segfault. I worked with Carl for a bit to sort it out and never did. Luckily for me, I was allowed to wipe Gentoo and install Debian 32 bit Jessie. What Im afraid of is if the next Debian roll out will kill RB. As far as running RB on a multilb box, it fails miserably also.

One day, it just RB 101 just wont work anymore and I hope RB 2.0 will be ready for us.

As long as Qemu supports a 32 bit virtual session, maybe this is how we will extend RB101 into the future. Time to experiment.

I just wanted to add an update to my previous post. I've got Debian 10 with multilib support added in and RB would still not run. Using ldd to see what libraries are needed to support RB, I realized that a number of the 32 bit versions of common libraries were missing. I apt-get installed the 32 bit versions of some of the missing libraries, but not all are available. I ended up copying a couple of libs from a 32bit version of jessie Debian and I am not serving apps with RB101, no problems.


I filed a report with Debian devs, but I dont believe much will be done concerning making Debian 10, 32 bit versions of these packages available. If anyone needs help email me... jmcbride-at-mail-on.us. change -at- to @
