Carl says:

Install Run BASIC in c:\rbp (which is the default suggestion of the installer) instead of in the Program Files folder. This is because recent versions of Windows (Vista and maybe even some versions of XP with very recent updates) has been getting very overbearing in terms how it will let you write files and other such things. Installing in a root folder like \rbp allows Run BASIC to read and write as it requires.

When you open Run BASIC Personal server, you must log in. The default username is "username" and the password is "password". You can change these in the preferences tab after logging in.

Once you are logged in, you'll find four tabs. The "Project" tab is where you write your code. "Preferences" allows you to set the way your copy of RBP works. "Publish" allows you to select which of your projects to serve as applications.

The "Help" tab allows you to select the help documents for the server and for writing code.

In the code help area, you'll find links to tutorials. These are a great place to get started! I highly recommend them. They are reworked from the original LB tutorials.

You can also choose to open a project when you are in the "Project" tab. Several sample projects come with RB.

This forum contains tips and code that should be helpful.

The community wiki is a wealth of helpful code and information. You can always access it from the link at the top of this forum. You'll also find an RSS feed at the bottom of the forum. The feed contains links to the most recently updated wiki pages.

Building Blocks are small articles with explanations of Run BASIC statements, functions and methods. They include runnable demo programs to illustrate syntax and usage.

I watched the short demo but I thought I heard that there wasn't a server involved. Then I read your post that said that you log into a server. I also heard it was stand alone but this can't be true since you ahve to log into A server to use the program. That would also explain the higher cost than Liberty Basic but it does appear to be easy to use. Not as easy as MySpace but easy. I think I need to watch the video again because I must have missed a lot.

Ron,

It comes with everything you need, so you don't need Apache or some other webserver because Run BASIC is the server. You don't create a standalone EXE like with a desktop application, so the word doesn't mean the same thing. The Run BASIC server is standalone. Your applications run on the server. Your users do not see your code and they don't see the Run BASIC system either.

Hi,
I purchased RunBasic a few months ago and am just getting around to getting acquainted with it.
I have a paid for web site and a local web site pointing to the web pages that I used to
document stuff on my WWII navy ship. I use Apache as my server for the local site.
My paid for site is : lanniewalker.com
and my local site is at: lanniewalker.no-ip.biz
and points to a folder from which I used to burn CDs to mail to interested parties and now,
since most folks have internet access, I simply let them view and/or download all or portions
of the stuff in which they might be interested. This saved me some trouble burning and
mailing. I had previously purchased Liberty Basic 4 which I had never gotten around to exploiting either. I designed and coded programs for aerospace applications for 35 years for
an aerospace company and retired in 1992. Just out of curiosity I decided that I would like to
get a personal web site just to see what was involved and have some fun. I knew nothing about HTML but learned enough to copy other people's pages and picking what I needed to
hand code my web site pages. AFter that, I decided to create a CD of my WWII navy ship in
the form of a "web site on a CD" to make available for fellow crewmwn and other interested
parties. Then later I decided just to install a server and point it to the folder on my hard drive which contained my WWII stuff so that anone interested can view or D/L the stuff.
Now, I never made an effort to learn all the things that one can do with a paid for web site so
I probably didn't even need to use Apache and No-IP for my local site. I did set up a couple of
FTP accounts for friends to exchange attachments that are too large for email attachments and I set up a Guestbook and hit counter and that's about the extent of it. After all this rambling, my point is this:
Does anyone on this forum have any sage advice for me about any advantages that might accrue to me by using RunBasic in place of, or in addition to, what I am doing now, understanding that what I do is simply for my own entertainment and nothing commercial is
involved. That is, I am retired and can do whatever I want and whenever I please. My wife
has passed on and answer to no one for the time I spend on computer related activity.
Thanks in advance.

I would say that if all you plan to do is provide information, the RB will not be much help.
But... if you want to make a page interactive or just have fun learning a new concept in web development, then RB is the way to go.

First - I want to thank you and all of our Veterans for your service.

Second - That is a cool photo script.
