Yeah, that's a good suggestion. Continuing down that road also brings up the question about whether or not to use Captcha for the form.

Instead of the e-mail link under contact, you should use a form to fill out or place the e-mail address as an image.

This prevents you from getting more Spam as needed.

1) I see from your website that you're using PHP. Are you interested in consolidation? I ask because I see the so-called LAMP stack as a more complex alternative rather than a complement to Run BASIC and sqlite.

2) For the Linux versus Windows VPS option, I think that it will be a more efficient use of resources to run on Linux, but for the typical Run BASIC user, I don't think it makes any difference where it runs. The only system dependent command in Run BASIC is shell$() and that really shouldn't be used much in a shared hosting environment. Take shell$() out of the picture and it doesn't matter what platform you are running. Am I wrong? Comments?

3) As Carl rolls out new versions of Run BASIC, I'll make the update available within a month. Each customer will be able to decide when to upgrade their server instance maybe from an option within the control panel.

Mysql and php?

Linux VPS is also available and will be offered later in 2010.

Determinate "later"?

Run BASIC Personal Server 1.01 Build 2.44.

I assume it is updated when new RB version is released? Not in same day, but asap?

Yeah, im interested, count me in :)

You are totally correct, there are only two differences left between Windows and UNIX, which the developer should handle already.
  • path separator ("\" vs. "/")
  • end-of-line character ("CR-LF" vs. "LF")

To initiate an update through a control panel option is a really nice way.

I think the most flexible version upgrade option would be to make it reversible. If a customer's app doesn't work right with the new version of Run BASIC, they could flip back to the older version.

Janet,

Stefan is right. I'll send out an email when the service is ready. Monday, January 18th is still the target date. There will be a "Subscribe" or "Buy" button on the main page.

Looking forward to having my RB programs online again. Will there be a 'subscribe' button soon, or is signing up for service notification sufficient?

Not sure which of my sites you mean, but i have plans to use RB as part of basicprogramming.org. It currently has wiki, blog, forum and so called main site. I dont have interest or time to create everything with RB, but maintain the main site and possible few other extensions i have planned with RB.

So i need support for php and mysql before it is reasonable to even consider moving site fully. Now i would need to host main site from other location that the rest of the site software.

However, i have few ideas what i can create from RB site you host, and integrate them as external part of bp.org.

I also have few game ideas where i need RB hosting, but those does not require php or mysql support.

Reason why i did ask is practically personal opinion about supporting "different type" of software, and has nothing practical reason. I think its better to not continue dialog about this issue anymore :) Im fine with it, if it works.

That sounds good in my ears.

The announcement is locked, probably so as not to get cluttered with general conversation. I just wanted to say Run BASIC Hosting looks good thus far. I haven't had a chance yet to publish all my programs, but here's one that my students use a lot.

Thanks, David. I'm very glad to have my programs online again. :D
