Brand new

Hi,

I still have water driping from behind my ears. I got an email from Carl today about the new RB release this weekend. I have been using Liberty Basic for years now.

But RB is all new to me. So here goes.....

I just started a web page with a hosting company this last week. I'm on a month to month deal. It's a real simple website. What I'm trying to do is sell an ebook I wrote. So I guess it's an ecommerce effort.

Is this something I can do with the new RB release? Would I be hosting my own site on my own PC? What about hooking up with paypal and oscommerce shopping cart?

Milfredo, go to runbasic.com and play with the tutorial and examples to get a feel for what Run BASIC is all about. It's not ready for you to do web commerce or shopping cart sites, since the current version is not made to run on an ISP's server. But you can run it only your own computer, and learn what you have to know to prepare for the future!

Some ISPs may allow Run BASIC to be installed, but it probably does need a slightly better web admin UI.

Yup. Some ISPs run Windows. Most do run Linux, of course.

Maybe I'm missing something here. With Run Basic, what is the general target for it......Personal websites that can run on a PC and doesn't need a hosting company?

Run BASIC isn't really meant for hosting the sort of website that you use FrontPage to create. Instead it is a system for creating web applications. You might host one or more applications on a PC at home, or on a PC at the office. It is possible that an ISP will be willing to run a Run BASIC server for you on their hardware. We are certainly interested in making whatever adjustments are needed to make it easy for them to do so.

What sort of applications is Run BASIC good for? I guess that's a little like asking what sort of applications BASIC, or Java, or Perl is good for. Since they are general purpose programming languages the applications are limited by our imaginations. Games, social networking, graphics, database apps, quotations, customer management, or whatever else you can think up.

We're calling it a personal server because we think the feature set is adequate for tackling personal sized apps. However there's no doubt that it can be used for some business apps just the way it is.
