Minecraft is a game released by Mojang AB and 4J Studios. It is a sandbox PC game with a blocky aesthetic centered around gathering resources to survive, exploring the randomly generated terrain, and creating worlds and sculptures using a variety of colorful blocks and tools, though the objective is largely based on the player's direction. The Wii U version of the game, known as Minecraft: Wii U Edition, was originally released for the Nintendo eShop on December 17, 2015,[1] and later released with a physical edition on June 17, 2016.[2] A Nintendo Switch port, known as Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, was released for the Nintendo eShop on May 11, 2017.[3] Aside from the different controls and an increased map size, it is otherwise identical to the Wii U game. An edition of Minecraft for the New Nintendo 3DS, aptly titled Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition, was launched on September 13, 2017. All of the Nintendo versions of the game feature an exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack , a complete Mario-themed reskin of the game's original objects.
A new version of Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, named simply Minecraft, was released on June 21, 2018. The new version allows cross-play with other consoles. Players who purchased the Nintendo Switch port can have an option to upgrade to the new version for free.
There are Three types of Minecraft versions. The most notable in Mojang is Minecraft Java Edition being the first to be released. The second is the Minecraft Bedrock Edition which allows cross platform gaming between various devices. The final version is an outdated one. Legacy or Console editions which included Wii U , PS3 (etc.)
Even though there are two versions, Mojang will still update Java and Bedrock.
Super Mario Mash-Up Pack[ ]
The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack was released as downloadable content for the Wii U version on May 17, 2016 (though it comes bundled with the physical edition), alongside the Nintendo Switch version on May 11, 2017, and as part of a free update to the New Nintendo 3DS version on June 5, 2018[4] . It was developed in conjunction with Nintendo.[5] Though the mechanics of Minecraft remain the same in the pack, everything has been visually changed to match the aesthetics of the Mario franchise, which includes different skins for the player and every block, item, and mob. There is also a premade world containing several Mario landmarks and multiple enemy gauntlets and jumping challenges[6] ; additionally, the mash-up pack comes with its own soundtrack comprising entirely of music from Super Mario 64 .

Development[ ]
After its initial beta release in 2009, Minecraft was officially released on PC in 2011. The first console version of the game was released exclusively for the Xbox 360 on May 9, 2012.[7] The following year, in 2013, additional versions of Minecraft for the Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita were announced.[8] [9] In December 2013, Markus "Notch" Persson stated that he was not aware of plans to port Minecraft to the Wii U but agreed that "a Wii U version would make sense."[10]
In June 2014, Shigeru Miyamoto and Shinya Takahashi were asked about the possibility of Minecraft releasing on the Wii U.[11] In response, Miyamoto stated:
- "I haven't played it myself, but I have heard quite a bit about it. I think he [Takahashi] knows more about it than I do. But I like that style of game, and I look at Mario Maker as being something in a similar vein."
- ―Shigeru Miyamoto
Takahashi followed, stating:
- "We've always thought internally that using the [Wii U] GamePad would probably make for a Minecraft that's very easy to play. And, of course, if we were to do something with Minecraft on the 3DS, similarly we would probably do it where it would be easier to play and could probably reach a lot of kids. What's interesting is that, in Japan, Minecraft is not popular in the way it is in the U.S. and Europe, so we've also thought that, if we were able to do a partnership like that, it might bring opportunity to help make Minecraft more popular in Japan."
- ―Shinya Takahashi
In September 2014, Mojang's business developer, Daniel Kaplan indirectly confirmed Minecraft was not planned for the Wii U during an interview, stating:[12]
- "It's mostly about platforms that make sense... With the release of PS4 and Xbox One I think we have fulfilled most of the needs for now. There aren't many platforms left to release on. We'll see, whatever makes sense and if the platform has the user base for it. We won't release on the platform if the base is very small because it's much too big of an effort."
- ―Daniel Kaplan
At MINECON 2015, Mojang's COO Vu Bui was asked about porting Minecraft to the Wii U and stated:[13]
- "If I had my way, we'd be on everything. We want to continue to be available to all players, and that means being on new platforms because everyone uses something different. I've never heard a reason why we haven't ended up on Wii U or 3DS. It just hasn't happened yet."
- ―Vu Bui
On November 11, 2015, a PEGI rating for Minecraft: Wii U Edition was leaked online.[14] The rating was removed six days later. [15]
On December 7, 2015, the game was officially confirmed, and Minecraft: Wii U Edition was released digitally on the Wii U eShop on December 17th, 2015.[16] A physical copy was released on June 17, 2016, alongside an update that added a Mario themed mash-up pack.[17]
At the Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 on January 12, 2017, Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition was announced and was released on the eShop as a launch title for the system on March 3, 2017, with a physical copy announced to be released later at an unspecified date.[18]
On September 13, 2017, Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition was announced in a Nintendo Direct, exclusively for New 3DS and New 2DS systems.[19] The game was released on the eShop in North America and Japan shortly after the presentation and received a physical release exclusively in North America a month later, on November 10, 2017. Minecraft: New 3DS Edition was released in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand on September 20, 2018 and never recieved a physical release.
Better Together Update[ ]
At E3 2017, Microsoft announced the Better Together update, which aimed to unify Minecraft across all platforms under a single edition, known as the Bedrock Edition. The update enabled cross-platform play and the sharing of content through Microsoft accounts. On June 21, 2018, Nintendo Switch Edition was discontinued and replaced with Bedrock Edition.[20] Due to this, the planned physical copy was canceled, causing Nintendo Switch Edition to be the only version of Legacy Console Edition to not release physically. Players who owned Nintendo Switch Edition were gifted Bedrock Edition for free.[20] Wii U Edition was discontinued on December 19, 2018 and New 3DS edition on January 15, 2019.[21] [22] Unlike Nintendo Switch Edition, neither of these systems received versions of Bedrock Edition.
Pre-release and unused content[ ]
Unused images in the files for Minecraft: Wii U Edition show that different skins were originally going to be used, rather than the ones in the final version. These include Hooktail as the Ender Dragon instead of Gobblegut, Midbus as the Pigs, and Yoshi as the Horses. Another image shows the Ender Chest with a Mr. I-themed design, rather than the Shy Guy-themed design it has in the release version. Zombie Villagers were originally Boomerang Bro.s, though they were changed in an update to Hammer Bros. wearing the clothes of the Pianta they were before they were transformed.
Other appearances[ ]
Steve appears as a Downloadable content character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate , with Alex, Zombie, and Enderman as costumes.
A Minecraft Movie is a 2025 American fantasy adventure comedy film based on the game. It was directed by Jared Hess and written by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta, from a story by Allison Schroeder, Bowman, and Palmer. The film stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen.
