Meowth <sup>(JPJapanese: ニャース

Romaji: Nyarth)</sup> is a species of Pokémon in the game series of the same name. It is a Normal-type Pokémon that made its first appearance in the first generation games Red and Blue. Meowth had two Regional forms. In Alola, it has a Dark-type variant, and in Galar, it has a Steel-type variant, as well as a Gigantamax form. Meowth with the Gigantamax Factor cannot evolve. Meowth became one of the most popular of the 151 species introduced in the first generation and overall all over 1,000 Pokémon, mostly because of its prominent role in the Pokémon anime, being a member of Team Rocket alongside Jessie and James. In Kanto and Alola, Meowth evolves into Persian, while in Galar, Meowth becomes Perrserker.

Main Pokémon games[ ]

Meowth was first seen in Pokémon Red and Blue and has been in almost every other Pokémon game since. It is a Scratch Cat Pokémon that is known for its high speed stat and the fact that is one of only two Pokémon to learn Pay Day (the other is its evolution Persian). It evolves into Persian at 28 or Happiness in Alola. It is known to be somewhat similar to other cat Pokémon such as Skitty and Glameow. In Galar, Meowth gained another evolved form in the form of Perrserker, evolving at Level 28. Kantoian Meowth also has a Gigantamax form. Meowth with the Gigantamax Factor cannot evolve. Team Rocket's Meowth appeared in Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition and their remakes Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! .

Other Pokémon games[ ]

Pokémon Channel : Meowth appears on the PNF (Pokémon News Flash), along with Psyduck. He goes out and interviews random Pokémon in random locations. Meowth also appears in Pichu Bros. in Party Panic , along with Jessie's Wobbuffet and the Squirtle Squad. He plans a party for himself and invites all the Pokémon from Big Town.

Super Smash Bros.[ ]

It is seen in the Super Smash Bros. series as a Poké Ball Pokémon (except Super Smash Bros. Melee ) that throws coins (using the move Pay Day) at the players. It also appears a Sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl that can be used by Pikachu, Jigglypuff, the Pokémon Trainer, and Lucario and boosts the power of their Slash-attribute attacks by 5, and in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Support Spirit that takes up one Spirit slot and boosts the power of thrown items when equipped. Rumors existed that Meowth was considered for inclusion as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. , but this has neither been confirmed nor denied by series creator Masahiro Sakurai.

In the anime[ ]

The most well-known Meowth featured in the anime is a member of Team Rocket, one of the anime's main antagonists for the first 25 seasons. He is unlike ordinary Meowth in that he can speak human language and walks on two legs instead of four. Alongside fellow Team Rocket members Jessie and James, he engages in various evil schemes, usually attempting to steal Ash Ketchum's Pikachu, but never succeeding. However, due to his unusual traits, he never learned any of his species' attacks, and as such, does not often participate in Pokémon battles. Meowth aims to please Giovanni, to the point that he frequently has bizarre daydreams about what mundane things the boss could do with the Pokémon they're trying to steal (especially in the episodes set in Hoenn and Sinnoh, and occasionally in Unova to Galar). In one episode, Meowth is capable of Gigantamax. Its Alolan and Galarian forms also made anime appearances.

Meowth ranked fourth on Game Daily's top 10 list of Nintendo characters that deserve their own games, describing him (presumably Meowth of the Team Rocket trio, rather than the species as a whole) as "adorable" and explaining that his intelligence and ability to speak gave him more depth than other Pokémon. IGN stated that without the anime, the species would not have been as famous, further describing the character of Team Rocket's Meowth as "probably the funniest part of the show". San Francisco Gate editor Jesse Hamlin stated that the trio's Meowth provided a few laughs in Pokémon the Movie 2000: The Power of One . However, another editor stated it was popular amongst people who have never seen the anime due to being a feline. Author Harry Schlesinger wrote that Meowth was popular among girls. Dale Bishir of IGN described Meowth as the most important Pokémon that impacted the franchise’s history, and further stated that the mascot of Team Rocket, Meowth has endured as the comic-relief of the trio and being one of the few Pokemon that can speak like humans. Steven Bogos of The Escapist listed Meowth as ninth of their favorite Pokemon, describing it as the most charismatic Pokemon of all time.

IGN said that Meowth of Team Rocket would make a good choice as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl : "if Brawl's developers really wanted much more representation for Pokemon as a franchise" also stating "it would be fun to face him in battle as a real fighter, just to be able to send him 'blasting off again.'" GamesRadar described Meowth as "not all that useful", and questioned if the species would have stood out if it were not for its portrayal in the anime.

GamesRadar editor Carolyn Gudmundson described Meowth as being "no slouch" compared to Snorlax, who she described as the greatest Pokémon ever. Fellow GamesRadar editor Justin Towell listed Meowth as one of video games' eight greatest cats, describing it as one of the most memorable species in the series. Authors Tracey West and Katherine Noll called Meowth the number one Normal type Pokémon and the tenth best Pokémon overall. They called its anime representation the "heart and soul of Team Rocket", and praised him as "funny and clever". WhatCulture included Meowth on 10 best first generation Pokemon.

In popular culture[ ]

A Japanese foodie named Maki Kudo created a series of Pokémon-themed recipes, which were later released in a book called Pokémon Cookbook. One of the recipes he made was "Meowth Mashed Potatoes". Apart from that, Meowth is also an inspiration for other Pokémon-themed recipes.

As one of the most popular characters from the Pokémon franchise, Meowth has been featured in various promotional events as well as collectible items. It was among eleven Pokémon selected as Japan's mascot for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The Meowth balloon was featured at a promotion for the film Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! at Urban Dock LaLaport Toyosu in Tokyo. In 2022, Meowth, along with other feline Pokémon species was featured on a three-dimensional electronic billboard in Japan to commemorate International Cat Day which is celebrated in August.
