Original Description
Reporting and Storytelling is the second phase of the shift towards a culture of accountability and data driven programs and activities across the movement, the first one being data collection and program tracking.
Storytelling is a skill that few people possess, but many people can learn and incorporate in their work. The effort to better tell stories is important: "it is a means for sharing and interpreting experiences. Stories are universal in that they can bridge cultural, linguistic, and age-related divides". The ability to understand the impact of a set of programs in a particular context is key for an international movement like Wikimedia.
The workshop will focus on the key aspects of a report (inputs, outputs, outcomes, and learning questions), quantitative aspects in reporting, and putting numbers in context. In this sense, the workshop will:
  • Put together different perspectives to bring out different uses of the story,
  • Provide some framework for thinking how this relates to specific cases,
  • Help identify inputs, outputs and outcomes in reporting and how to draw conclusions from this data, with specific questions.
  • Identify steps in reporting and storytelling
The workshop will start with some key definitions and workflow on storytelling, and will later on call participants to action. We will ask the audience to break in groups and hand in program case studies, with different data and context information. Groups will have to solve a proposed exercise, with help from facilitators. Closure will include challenges faced and key takeaways.
Desired Outcome
Train program managers in the art of story telling in the context of Wikimedia programs, including the key aspects of a report (inputs --> outputs --> outcomes --> learning questions), quantitative aspects, and numbers in context. Address difficulties volunteers and organizations have in adequately "telling their story"
Audience
Wikimedia program managers and program leaders
