Field notes were a collection of thoughts and observations by scientific personnel, usually when going on some kind of expedition.
In 2347, the Hansens left the Alpha Quadrant to study the Borg. During this time, they recorded over nine thousand log entries in their field notes while traveling in the USS Raven. (VOY: "The Raven", "Dark Frontier")
In 2375, when Seven of Nine created tension among the USS Voyager crew and particular B'Elanna Torres with her observations of them, Captain Kathryn Janeway told her that she was on a starship, not a nature preserve and that she shouldn't be taking field notes on the crew. (VOY: "Someone to Watch Over Me")
