There's the COMPUTE verb that works a bit like that. However, the
 ADD X TO Y [GIVING Z]
 MULTIPLY X BY Y [GIVING Z]
 DIVIDE X BY Y [GIVING Z]
is more traditional, I would guess.
Also, for simple assignments, there's MOVE:
 MOVE 'INDIA' TO WS-COUNTRY.

My uncle made a career out of COBOL programming. He described his work
as consisting mostly of MOVE statements.
