Unicode - and MIMEType - Good friday fun.

I believe this is the problem line -- the MIMEText constructor takes 
encoded strings rather than unicode objects. Try:
msg = MIMEText(a)
Or, alternatively
msg = MIMEText(b.encode('utf-8'))
