Things are looking as if this might actually happen.
These are the bugs in the 2.2.1 category on sf:

 529104 broken error handling in unicode-escape lemburg
 528132 classmethod().__get__() segfault gvanrossum
 530285 redefining SRE_CODE in Modules/sre.h effbot
 513033 unsafe call to PyThreadState_Swap gvanrossum
 505587 Fix hardlink against NavServices jackjansen
The top three are the blockers, but fixes/comments for any are
appreciated.
Patches in need of attention:
521478 mailbox / fromline matching bwarsaw
523944 imputil.py can't import "\r\n" .py files gstein
525763minor fix for regen on IRIX jackjansen
None of these are blockers.
