I haven't opened one, since the changes are simply a forward-port of
what is currently implemented in the trunk. Although, I agree that it
would have been a good idea to open a ticket for a quick review of the
patch before committing.

I haven't changed the types of the returned values--i.e, the modified
codecs still return bytes like before.
