Python 1.5.1 compatibility hacks:
 - define our own 'rmtree()' -- the one in shutil was broken in 1.5.1
 - refer to os.error instead of OSError
 - don't assume IOError and os.error objects have 'filename' and
 'strerror' attributes -- inspect first
 - don't use list.pop()
