A couple more possibilities (Guido is probably going to have to choose a 
colour for this bikeshed somewhere along the line...):
mystr.recodeto('unicode-escaped')
mystr.recodefrom('unicode-escaped')
mybytes.recodeto('hex')
mybytes.recodefrom('hex')
