well I eventually got a ping response from both nic's, but 
it was very slow. Also from one of the machines on my LAN 
I can ping both interfaces. But I can't ping anything on 
the inet. Another weird thing also happened, Apache failed 
to start, and midnight commander would not run, or at least 
I didn't wait long enough for it to start. Now I'm wondering 
if this could be hardware related, like memory going bad. 
Anyway thanks for all the input.
