netbsd-help: Going from 1.4.1 to current

Is there a FAQ for doing this? I'm running 1.4.1 and trying to compile
current. I get lots of this:
 all ===> usr.bin/binutils/strings
 Unknown modifier 'O'
 Unknown modifier 'O'
in userland and other errors in the kernel. What steps should I take to
get a clean build?
