That doesn't mean that FNaF doesn't deserve the reception it's got though.
Scott did get a bit lucky, for this to blow up like it did. Especially considering how uncommon it is for an indie game to do this well.
But he deserves it.
You mentioned that you don't see why it's so popular, so I just wanted to point out a few reasons.
The game does have positive qualities. It's not just jumpscares.

Jumpscares are quite cliche. And besides, I've seen most of those qualities you just stated in many under appreciated horror games.
