KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC):
THE JAMAICA Golf Association (JGA) is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
Since its establishment in 1925, the JGA has been at the forefront of golf development in Jamaica, fostering talent, hosting world-class tournaments, and elevating the sport’s profile both regionally and internationally.
Founded with the mission of unifying and regulating golf in Jamaica, the JGA has played a pivotal role in creating opportunities for local players to compete at the highest levels. Over the past century, the association has not only nurtured some of the Caribbean’s most talented golfers, but has also helped cement Jamaica’s reputation as a premier golfing destination.
From the picturesque fairways of Caymanas Golf Club to the serene landscapes of Upton Estate and the breathtaking views at Tryall, Cinnamon Hill, White Witch, Half Moon, and Negril Hills, golf has thrived across the island.
Throughout its history, the JGA has been dedicated to expanding access to the sport. Through initiatives like the JGA junior golf programme, national championships, and partnerships with organisations such as the Sandals Foundation and other corporate sponsors, the association has introduced golf to new generations, according to President Jodi Munn-Barrow.
“The Jamaica Golf Association has stood the test of time, evolving to meet the changing needs of the sport while upholding the traditions and values that make golf unique. This 100-year milestone is a testament to the dedication of players, coaches, administrators, and supporters who have shaped Jamaican golf into what it is today.”
Even before the JGA’s inception, golf had deep roots in Jamaica. The Manchester Golf Club, celebrating its 160th anniversary this year, stands as a testament to the sport’s enduring legacy. Established in 1865, the Mandeville-based club is not only the oldest golf course in the Caribbean but also one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere, as is explained by Manchester golf club captain Tony Cha.
“As we commemorate 160 years, we reflect on the enduring legacy of Manchester Golf Club. From its colonial-era origins to its present-day role in Jamaican golf, this club has been a gathering place for players, a training ground for champions, and a symbol of the sport’s lasting presence in Jamaica.”
Jamaica’s golfing heritage is further highlighted by the success of its homegrown talent in prestigious international tournaments, including the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship, the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship, and various National Opens. The island has also hosted renowned events such as the Johnny Walker Championship, the Jamaica Classic, and the annual Jamaica Open.
To mark this historic milestone, the JGA has planned a series of events throughout the year, including a centennial golf tournament/Pink Ball fundraiser (June 21, 2025); golf clinics, a gala and awards ceremony (August 21, 2025); Manchester Club 160 golf event (October 26, 2025); and a Newsletter/E-Zine, highlighting the JGA’s history, achievements, and the stories of local golfers over the past century.
