The IEEE-ITU Symposium on Achieving a Sustainable Climate (ISASC) aims to leverage digital transformation and emerging technologies to boost environmental efficiency. The 1st Symposium, held in December 2024, brought together global leaders to initiate a collaborative roadmap for climate action. A second Symposium is being planned for 16-17 December 2025, with a new program that provides an update on the progress of the collaborative Technology Roadmap.

The IEEE-ITU Symposium on Achieving a Sustainable Climate returns this year with a focused program on the energy transition and the critical role of the ICT sector.

Achieving a sustainable climate centers on both mitigation and adaptation. Concrete actions are essential, and it is crucial to establish the groundwork for a swift, just, feasible, and equitable transition. This transition must be supported by robust policy, standards, skills, finance, and collaboration.

ISASC 2025 will take place from December 16-17 in Geneva, Switzerland:

IEEE and ITU , with support from several UN Agencies, policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and standards development organizations convened to strengthen collective actions towards achieving a sustainable climate. The symposium is structured around four key building blocks:

  • Research, Technology, and Standards
  • Policy, Regulation, and Implementation
  • Education and Skills Development
  • Finance, Trade, and Development

This event contributes to the broader Green Digital Action (GDA) initiative, which unites countries and companies to ensure that digital transformation and environmental sustainability go hand in hand.

The 2025 Symposium aims to achieve the following key objectives:

  • Examine the Global Energy Transition: Track the progress of the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy across the world and identify policy, infrastructure, and technology drivers behind grid decarbonization and electrification.
  • Explore the Intersection of Energy and ICT: Highlight how digital tools are enabling access, reliability, and community-level engagement, and showcase how energy access facilitates ICT deployment.
  • Effective Technology Use Cases: Present effective use of technologies and practices to demonstrate how clean and reliable energy and ICT technologies enable improvements in education, health, agriculture, transportation, economic empowerment, and more.
  • Advance Cross-Cutting Enablers: Identify pathways to scale smart infrastructure, enhance workforce development, secure inclusive finance, and enhance AI-driven systems—ensuring equitable energy access and global resilience.
  • Impacts of a Technology Roadmap: Outline the potential value of a collaborative roadmap for enhancing global climate sustainability and promoting environmental efficiency.
