Hello Drupal world!

I released beta1 of the 7.x branch of Cache Router over the holiday. The new release passes all Core Cache Tests for APC, File, Database, eAccelerator, and Memcache. XCache is currently broken, and I'm working to get that engine working again as well.

Here's a quick update on the Drupal.org redesign infrastructure. The first drupal.org site to be upgraded to Drupal 6 will be the Drupal association site. We are doing this for a couple of reasons. First, we want to a small project to test out our new collaboration infrastructure: VMs, Database, SVN, Access Control to allow more people to work on the upgrade. Second, upgrading association.drupal.org will allow us to upgrade to CiviCRM 2.1 and help with fund raising. The association will be dropping case tracker module so that we can upgrade to Drupal 6.

The Association met the other day and set the following dates for Drupalcon proposals.

January 31st, 2009: Proposal Deadline Drupalcon Europe 2009 to be held fall 2009
February 15th, 2009: Deadline to submit an intention to submit a Drupalcon North America 2010 proposal.
March 1st, 2009: Proposal deadline for Drupalcon North America 2010
ongoing (2010, 2011, etc.): 30 days before the precending Drupalcon in the target region.

This week we have made lots of some smaller changes throughout the whole prototype, items that were delayed from iteration 10. For this release, we've paid particular attention to several pages:

1. Marketplace

2. Download and Extend

3. Modules landing page

4. Themes landing page

5. Search_by theme

6. Home page

7. Dashboard

There has been a lot of great feedback on the iteration 10 post, thank you all for your valuable input.

Drupal 7 will (hopefully) see the introduction of a new and completely overhauled help system (read: starting from scratch).
However, this mean that all documentation must be re-written.

This is not a job for one person! We need everyone to pitch in and help (no pun intended). If everyone can write two (2) pages, then we'll be very well off.

The kind people at the Help System group on groups.drupal.org have assembled a workflow for you to take part in. Here's how to write a help page for a module:

1. Log in here. If you don't already have an account, you can log in with YOUR_DRUPAL.ORG_USERNAME@drupal.org as your usename and your drupal.org password as your password
2. Navigate your browser here to start your new wiki page.
3. Choose "Drupal Documentation Task" for the "Group categories" vocabulary; and
4. Choose the name of the module for which you are writing documentation for the "Help topic module" vocabulary.
5. Fill in the title and the body to those that you wish to appear on your help page
6. Be sure to adhere to the guidelines

If everyone can do two (2) of these, we'll have all the help pages in core done in a matter of days. And guess who it starts with? You!

If you would like to edit an existing page, simply go to the Help System group, find the page along the left, click on it, and click the edit tab.

Iteration 8 is now available for you to browse and comment on. Last week the redesign took a pretty drastic change in direction so this week's release isn't as massive as we have worked to consolidate changes to the IA, reacting to feedback from the testing and to trends we have established in the community feedback.

There have been a lot of bug fixes as well as the a complete rewrite of the checkout. The checkout ATM is only a single page and options like changing address and payment type have not been put back in. These are going to use the #ahah feature of the new formapi to allow users to change much easier. I am going to put back multi page checkouts, but this will be done by configuration and not be forced on the site admin.

The checkout api has completely changed and is now much more modular and should allow for much better formed functions.

DrupalDay, Italian association for the development and promotion of the famous Open Source CMS, is pleased to announce the first DrupalDay.

The event will be held Friday 28th November 2008 from 9,30 am to 5,30 pm at Auditorium of Polytechnic of Milan located in Viale Romagna, 62 in Milan (Italy).

The program will provide a wide range of reports on technical and functional issues and offer opportunities for debates and comparison.

The event is hosted by POUL, no profit student association and is sponsored by Wellnet, web software house in Milan. Participation is free but a pre-registration is recommended.

I saw this article referenced in the economist. Groups.drupal.org has done wonders for the community by empowering local and working groups and giving them control over their groups. What we seem to be missing is training. Does it make sense to provide training for group organizers and event managers?
