This year gonna be a remarkable year for all druperlers as we are heading towards Drupal 8 release by July or so.
Drupal 8 would bring in lot of new features, adapting new technologies, device responsiveness and tremendous development shift from Drupal 7. The learn curve takes a different level to get acquainted with Drupal 8 architecture. You may check out Dries blog post on for updated Drupal 8 release reschedule. Yet Drupal 7 is mature enough to stay active for many months.
