Multisite

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
This group should probably have more organizers. See documentation on this recommendation.

Hello and welcome.

I'm running several sites using Drupal's multisite feature, and noticed the absence of a group to discuss the various issues and how-tos related to doing this. If anyone has any questions about the basics, I can probably answer them. I'd also like to see some tutorials about more advanced stuff like sharing database tables.

Posted by lseigel on February 21, 2012 at 7:43pm

I have a multisite install with 4 different URLS. How do I setup unique metatags (keywords and description) for each URLS. It seems like the keywords and description are the same for all of the URLS.

Single Admin/Backend for multisite setup?

Posted by jasonabc on February 9, 2012 at 5:32pm

Hi - I've been trying to find the answer to these questions but not had much luck so hoping someone here can help me :-)

1) With a multisite setup - can all sites be administered via a single backend or is it separate Admins for each individual site?
2) Are logins shared between sites? So if I login on Site A and then go to Site C I am logged in on both? Anything else that can be shared between sites?

thanks!

Jason

Advice on Multisite planning

Posted by sigurdur on February 8, 2012 at 1:58pm

Hi there,

I've been experimenting with Drupal, planning to migrate a website from Typo3. As a part of the migration, I've been rethinking the structure and setup of the site and would really appreciate your input.

Current setup:

Multisite/DA for non-techy clients -- Opinions?

Posted by greta_drupal on January 31, 2012 at 9:07pm

Have a client who is ready for a proper website (from a very old static HTML site -- think Netscape 4 days), but don't seem to be web-savvy. I think these nice people could easily be overwhelmed in the CMS world, even though it really is very easy to add/update content. So, easy of client use is important. Given that, I am on the fence about the best approach to take -- ideally Drupal 7:

Domain Access
Multisite (shared db)
2 standalone sites

Is Multisite the right way for small webdevelopment company?

Posted by janton on January 27, 2012 at 12:38pm

Hello All,

I now work with drupal approximately 1 year and really like the CMS system, i'm starting a small company with a friend and we are going to deliver simple small sites for restaurants/health shops/gymes just "the small companies" around the corner.

I was reading about Multisite and found this interesting, because this way i don't need to check/update all the CMS systems when there is a Security Update.

Symlinks in a Plesk D7 multisite install

Posted by wxman on January 8, 2012 at 4:23pm

I've been reading all I can find about doing a multisite install using Plesk 10 (Linux). My problem is a common one: I have separate SSL certs, and I need separate site stats. The sites that have the SSL's have their own IP's.

D7 as multisite or as a library?

Posted by wipeout_dude on December 27, 2011 at 11:16pm

Hi All..

Looking for some advice on how best to setup my server to host multiple D7 sites..

I have been experimenting and there seem to be a few ways to get the same result but I don't know if there are any particular issues with managing and maintaining either of these setups.. Any input would be very much appreciated..

Setup 1

The first way I tested was the following directory setup.. ( -> is a symlink)

/public_html/
-/core
--/drupal-7.9
--/drupal-7.10
---/sites
----/all
----/site1.com -> ../../sites/site1.com
----/site2.com -> ../../sites/site2.com

Multisite Event Calendar

Posted by michael2z on December 27, 2011 at 9:06pm

I have searched for several weeks now for an up-to-date tutorial on sharing event data. I am running multiple sites using Drupal 6. One of the sites has an event calendar that most of the others need to replicate while also being able to add their own events. I have successfully implemented sharing using the iCal view on the main site and the feeds module with the iCal parser on a client. Unfortunately, I can't get the iCal feed to include any additional fields. I need to have taxonomy information and a few other fields shared.

OG for Multisite Domains

Posted by markwk on December 26, 2011 at 12:22pm

I'm thinking about technologies and options for a new multisite, edu multidomain project. Basic idea: people buy subscriptions to create custom domain sites.

Instead of pure sites for each domain, I'm thinking of using OG and some workflows for each domain. How capable is OG for custom full domain sites? Not just subdomains, 123.mysite.com but mysite123.com and mysite345.com all under the main code OG code base?

How best to track which mulitisites have which modules enabled

Posted by Lakeside on December 2, 2011 at 5:52pm

The issue is when a module or theme is updated it's advised to run update.php and then clear the site's cache.

Other than keeping track of the enabled modules and themes for the various sites on an excel spreadsheet what system are you using?

Updating a Multisite with separate databases

Posted by hellomobe on November 17, 2011 at 8:14pm

I've structured my multisite to share modules, core, and themes, but the databases are completely separate. User created content doesn't need to be shared.

Being new to this process, how do I go about updating "database" structured items across all the databases. For instance, how could I add/change a view? Or add a field to a content type? Or add a taxonomy term?

Is this a HACK or BAD SERVER?

Posted by Lakeside on November 4, 2011 at 1:38am

There have been periodic problems with a Drupal 7 multisite installation with this one hosting company. What happens is when the site is visited an error code, like the one attached, appears. It affects the primary site as well as all of the multisites. The only way to fix it s to re-install Drupal's core, then all of the sites return to normal.

The error logs don't show anything.

Does this look more like a server issue or that the site has been hacked?

Moving Sites built on MultiSite to work with Domain Access

Posted by dotman on October 18, 2011 at 6:47pm

Hi,

we're in the process of moving our main site to Drupal and was intending on using multisite. We've already move one smaller site over doing just that, and will be moving another over soon.

Now our manager really likes the idea of sharing content across all sites, which I was guessing would mean using the Domain Module.

How hard is it, or more specifically, what would be the process of moving sites that each have their own database to use Domain Access, since what i understand is, it uses one database for all sites.

Sharing Content among two sites

Posted by guti on October 12, 2011 at 3:45pm

I'm about to decide whether to use a multisite approch or simply copy my drupal installation to another site and make some changes to it there. The problem is that both sites share 80% of their content, but not all. When I edit some of the shared content, I want it to appear on both sites.
So is there a way to share parts of the content between two sites in a multisite setup? Something like that I can configure for each page whether it should be available on both domains or only on one. I know I can have completely separate or completely identical content, but is a mix possible?

Best Practice Sharing Portion of Database Between Two Multisite Domains.

Posted by Lakeside on October 11, 2011 at 5:12pm

Have two domains. One is designed for desktop systems and the other strictly for mobile devices.

Ideally the member's content would appear on both domains and that their login info be the same.

Now for the problem:

Since these are two different domains (on a multisite) the site configuration is different. That includes the site name, modules, domain address.

What is the best practice to keep the basic admin info separate, but still have shared content? What about sharing user login info between the two sites? (Of course the admin login will be different for each site.)
