Future directions for Drupal Accessibility in D8 and D9

Posted by andrewmacpherson on May 19, 2016 at 11:58pm

A few weeks ago Mike Gifford reached out to me to ask if I would consider joining the team of accessibility maintainers for Drupal core... and after giving it some thought I said YES! I'm really stoked about being asked - I've been bouncing around my home a LOT since Mike asked me. There currently an open issue to update MAINTAINERS.txt.

In-place configuration for Drupal - Inside-out approach

Hi Usability Group members !

I wish to get your help regarding a contrib project (and potentially a DDD Milan presentation).

Context:
I wish to explore what Dries usually calls Outside-In approach (I tend to rather like in-place administration as a name but OK!).

A11y toolkit module

Posted by btopro on March 24, 2016 at 6:13pm

Just wanted to blast it here as well that I made an accessibility toolkit module which provides a block to help provide ways of improving your site for different visual impairments; most resolving around dyslexia (like a font that makes it easier to read). We also store the setting in a cookie and in the future will do this on the serverside so it doesn't have to reload each time (as the screencast currently shows).

Support, feedback and improvement suggestions always welcome: https://drupal.psu.edu/blog/post/a11y-accessibility-toolkit-module

[Webinar] Drupal 8 Accessibility: What We Didn't Get in Core (Yet!)

We accomplished a great deal with Drupal 7’s accessibility when it was released in 2011. In Drupal 8, the community built on this and added broader support for ARIA & ATAG, two W3C standards which were not stable in 2011. D8 has also seen many enhancements for keyboard only users, low vision users and people who are colour blind. Drupal stands as the most accessible CMS available, but there is a great deal still to be done.

Null value for Alt text

Posted by sdelorey on November 6, 2015 at 4:10pm

I am using Adaptive theme to make many websites, and despite it being possible to create an alt field for all of my images I am unsure of what to do with a decorative image that should display the alt text of "".

If I leave the alt text field empty, the result is alt=

If I add "" to the alt text field, the result is alt=""""

Does anyone know of a good solution for this issue?

The International Day of People with Disabilities - Dec 3, 2015

Posted by mgifford on October 13, 2015 at 1:29pm

The annual International Day of People with Disabilities is coming up in December.

It would be nice to do something big this year in the Drupal community.

We've come a long ways with Drupal 8, and it would be nice to highlight all that we've done to make this the accessible CMS to beat.

If folks have ideas of ways to promote accessibility & Drupal, let's discuss them here. We've got a bit of time till December 3rd.

Accessibility and Google reCaptcha

Posted by shyamala on August 14, 2015 at 2:14am

No Captcha is truly Accessible is the constant feedback. But looking at reCaptcha V 2.0 where Google actually throws up images/audio only when, on mouse actions it detects that the it is not a user and Also the image option has an audio captcha option, I thought that Google reCaptcha was an accessible solution.

How do we validate it is WCAG compliant? Any documentation to say reCAPTCHA Version 2.0 is WCAG compliant? There is a note on the reCAPTCHA home page which talks about Accessibility, but there is no direct compliance indicated!

Drupal 7 accessible pager

Posted by jwilson3 on August 13, 2015 at 4:02pm

I'm currently working on a university project that wants to improve their #a11y support on their library website.

One of the main concerns found is that the site is chock full of one-word links like "view all" "read more" etc, that are totally impossible to interpret when taken out of context. (WCAG 2.0, section 2.4.9)

One really good example of poor accessibility support is the Drupal 7 pager. Links in the pager read by a screen reader, when taken out of context, lose all meaning (E.g. "one" "two" "three" "next" "last").

Interested in developing an accessibility testing module?

Posted by cliff on May 26, 2015 at 8:02pm

Karl Groves, who has developed a highly useful automated accessibility evaluation tool, is looking for a Drupal developer who can build a plugin for that tool, tenon.io.

Where Karl said "plugin," I am sure he means "custom module." So if module development is your thing and you would like to help more Drupal sites become more accessible, send an email to karl@tenon.io.

Thanks!

What should novices know about Drupal and accessibility?

Best Accessible Audio Player

Posted by skessler on April 6, 2015 at 8:43pm

I am looking for the best accessible audio player that is available for Drupal. I have looked at a couple and none of them appear to be that good. I found a native HTML 5 player that tests well (http://terrillthompson.com/ableplayer/test0.html) but I do not see this for Drupal.

Thanks,
Steve
