The current contribution guide in the README should be expanded into it's own dedicated guide. As a start it would be good to detail practices and tools that might deviate from the expected norm. Similar, also document the release process and expectations for contributions.

I think documenting how to use git and GitHub should be out of scope of this guide and should be addressed by links to better resources.
