Official Raspberry Pi 5inch Capacitive Touch Display 2 not working. #2013
Hi
Thank you for an excellent system.
I am putting a new system together and i wanted to use the "Official Raspberry Pi 5inch Capacitive Touch Display 2" but i cant get it to show anything.
I have tested the display with Raspberry pi OS and it works so i know it is properly connected.
I have tried pacman -Syu and pacman -Syu raspberrypi-utils. It did not have any effect.
I would very much appreciate any suggestions.

Hi,
I have made some progress and the screen is no longer black. i have edited the /boot/config.txt file and added dtoverlay for the screen. this brings up the picture but it seems to conflict with my Hifiberry Amp2 hat. There is no sound and the volume wheel on the screen has disappeared. When connecting via computer browser I get the same picture.

This is my /boot/config.txt.
disable_overscan=1
disable_splash=1
#display_auto_detect=1
dtoverlay=hifiberry-dacplus
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-ili9881-5inch
force_eeprom_read=1
hdmi_ignore_hotplug=1
Thank you!

New update,
I have managed to get both sound and picture but the screen does not seem to update and the touch function does not map with the controls on the screen.
Here is my new boot/config.txt.
disable_overscan=1
disable_splash=1
dtoverlay=hifiberry-dacplus
dtparam=i2s=on
hdmi_ignore_hotplug=1
display_auto_detect=1
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-ili9881-5inch,rotation=90
I also have set the rotation in Ui Browser settings to 90 CW
After editing the config.txt i had to go to Player/Output and select HIFIBerry Dac+ HIFI

I think I cracked it.
Her is my settings for getting Raspberry Pi 5inch Capacitive Touch Display 2 working on my system.

Thank you for sharing.
This setting will be included in the next update. Please try the UPDATE if you know how.
By the way, someone with Raspberry Pi Touch Display (1st gen.) - please confirm whether any manual settings needed.

Hi, thank you for this excellent piece of software(s including phone app) i daily use for a while now, i've juste upgraded (using new image) an old version from ~2023
Version rAudio 20260714 (i20260714 64b image)
Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Rev 1.2
Raspberry Pi Touch Display 1st gen 800x480
HiFiBerry Digi+ Pro
those manual settings are needed for the first gen : please find below working parameters :
config.txt :
disable_overscan=1
#disable_splash=1
#display_auto_detect=1
dtoverlay=hifiberry-digi-pro
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-7inch,invx,invy
#dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-7inch
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d
#Disable unused BT and wifi on rpi3
dtoverlay=pi3-disable-wifi
dtoverlay=pi3-disable-bt
dtparam=i2s=on
dtparam=sd_poll_once=on
hdmi_ignore_hotplug=1
max_usb_current=1
commenting display_auto_detect=1 is required (at least on my inverted mode : else display is inverted as it should but the touch part is not)
adding "dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d"
adding "dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-7inch,invx,invy" which inverts the touch part of the screen, whereas the display itself is rotated using the following
cmdline.txt :
root=PARTUUID=90d47983-02 rw rootwait plymouth.enable=0 dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 fsck.repair=yes isolcpus=3 console=tty3 quiet loglevel=0 logo.nologo vt.global_cursor_default=0 vt.global_cursor_default=0 video=DSI-1:800x480@60,rotate=180
the non inverted mode works using "dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-7inch" (without invx and invy) in addition to "dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d" in config.txt and "video=DSI-1:800x480@60,rotate=0" in cmdline.txt
hoping this makes its way into main someday
regards,

I have a 7" touch display, and I have to manually copy shutdown.sh content to /lib/systemd/system-shutdown to turn off the back light.
In portrait mode (rotate 90°), the touch functions are not rotated, and some cover art is oversized unless a volume control is displayed (same problem as the web display.)

The settings so far, at least for 90 and 270 degrees, don't work.
I came across a lot of post, where people tried to get it work setting 'rotate=', 'rotation=' or 'panel_orientation=' in 'cmdline.txt' or 'config.txt' or combinations of it in both files.
I did extensive tests for my own kiosk application, but unfortunately no configuration solved my problem.
The display hardware does not support rotations of 90 and 270 degrees, this functionality is just not built in.
It's up to graphics subsystem to do the job. Setting the orientation of the console with driver parameters works as intended, but framebuffer drivers, the X server or Wayland tend to ignore rotations not done natively by hardware. Where 'tend' means depending on the setup of your system, you get the wanted result or you don't get it.
Finally I kicked out the 'rotate=' stuff and ended up using xrandr and xinput.
Now to rAudio - I recognized my matrices being different from those used by rAudio.
Which lead me to the following solution:
- Don't add a 'video=' parameter to '/boot/cmdline.txt'.
- Add 'dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-ili9881-7inch' to /boot/config.txt, without ',rotation='
- Edit '/srv/http/bash/settings/features.sh' to include the display settings
Place the code in section 'localbrowser )' , right before the 'else # html' condition.
elif grep -q ili9881-7inch /boot/config.txt; then
case $ROTATE in
0 ) rotate=NORMAL;;
90 ) rotate=CW && matrix='0 1 0 -1 0 1 0 0 1';;
180 ) rotate=UD && matrix='-1 0 1 0 -1 1 0 0 1';;
270 ) rotate=CCW && matrix='0 -1 1 1 0 0 0 0 1';;
esac
if [[ $R_CHANGED ]]; then
rotateconf=/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-raspi-rotate.conf
if [[ $ROTATE == 0 ]]; then
rm -f $rotateconf
else
sed "s/ROTATION_SETTING/$rotate/; s/MATRIX_SETTING/$matrix/" /etc/X11/xinit/rotateconf > $rotateconf
fi
splashrotate
fi
else # html
Notes: I hard coded the path, using 'grep -q ili9881-7inch $config_file' did not work. In the UI I can't switch to 'NORMAL' rotation, the OK button stays greyed out.
Additional information:
The official Touch Display 2 has another major issue, the touch functionality is lost after reboot.
https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=389937&sid=587e7cd704117813bdd2e2e26bfe34ca#p2355171
You need to setup a system service to solve that problem. This is a workaround, to my knowledge there is no final solution.
You can control the brightness using the code below, the display-number depends on your setup.
echo <value> | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/<display-number>/brightness
e.g.
echo 25 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/6-0045/brightness
