This is a very personal question as it’s going to vary quite a bit. I’ll add that these are my personal ideas and my team varies in the tools it uses. Most use VSCode, but I work with one smart scientist who is trying out vim/neovim.

RStudio has good got integration so if you’re experienced with it you may be most productive sticking with it.

I use git for windows or git as part of Mac’s command line tools. It’s terminal, but the git commands are pretty easy to learn. I like recommending github skills learning lab as they have a set of exercises. Coursera also has many courses, but I don’t have a specific one to recommend.

The GitHub Desktop tool is pretty easy to install and approved for use at CDC but I find it clunkier than the terminal commands. Hope this helps. Please post what works for you.
