Steps to reproduce

Enable auto upload for camera folder
Take some photos
Some auto uploaded files have size 0

Expected behaviour

Auto upload should upload the correct image or just fail and ask to retry or retry automatically

Actual behaviour

I am using the auto upload function of the android app for my photos and since about a 1-2 weeks ago I started noticing grey images in immich. After checking, the original photos from nextcloud were affected but immich couldn't do so since the folder is binded as read-only inside docker.
As I also use the auto delete function after upload, the affected photos are lost but fortunately the lost photos were not so important.
I was expecting yesterday a corruption and I took a screenshot of the gallery to know how many files to expect and I had 3 videos and 7 photos and after the auto upload, 2 of the 7 photos got corrupted as size 0 but the 3 videos were ok.
I tried to debug the server logs of nextcloud as well as of apache but while apache logs did have some 500 errors in them, they weren't logged in nextcloud at all and I do have logs enabled for nextcloud.
I tried to debug the server as I was expecting to have problems due to Snapraid + Mergerfs config that I use or some disks failing but everything looks fine server side so i started to doubt the android app having some problems and found some other users reporting size 0 for uploaded files in #16332 .

Below are the steps I've already tried while debugging with AI all the possible problems. I've asked it to create a resume of what I've tried:

  1. Verified filesystem upload paths
    Checked uploads directory:
    ls -lah data/tzxmaster/uploads/
    Result: directory exists but is empty
    → indicates chunked uploads are cleaned up or failing before persistence

  2. Checked file cache database state
    Ran:
    SHOW TABLE STATUS WHERE Name='oc_filecache';
    Result:
    ~2,099,539 rows
    Update_time: 2026年01月31日 22:14:48
    No signs of corruption or stalled cleanup

  3. Ran Nextcloud file cleanup
    Executed:
    occ files:cleanup
    Result:
    0 orphaned file cache entries deleted
    0 orphaned file cache extended entries deleted
    0 orphaned mount entries deleted
    Conclusion: file cache consistent

  4. Verified PHP & PHP-FPM environment
    PHP 8.1.18
    Memory limit: 8192 MB
    Max execution time: 3600s
    Upload max size: 256 GB
    PHP-FPM pool status:
    48 total processes
    No max-children reached
    No slow requests
    Conclusion: no resource exhaustion

  5. Analyzed Apache access logs for the failing upload
    Observed exact request sequence for the same file:
    HEAD /remote.php/dav/files/...jpg → 200
    PROPFIND /remote.php/dav/files/...jpg → 207
    PUT /remote.php/dav/files/...jpg → 500
    Example failing request:
    "PUT /remote.php/dav/files/adi/InstantUpload/Camera/2026/01/PXL_20260131_164927053.MP.jpg HTTP/1.1" 500 User-Agent: Nextcloud-android/3.35.2

  6. Checked Apache error logs
    Searched exact timestamp of the 500 error:
    grep "21:06:55" /var/log/apache2/error.log
    Result: no matching entries
    Conclusion: error is not generated by Apache itself

  7. Checked Nextcloud application logs
    Searched for file name:
    grep 164927053 nextcloud.log
    Findings:
    Preview generation works:
    Requesting preview for /adi/files/...jpg
    WebDAV access works later:
    GET /remote.php/dav/files/...jpg → 200

Repeated warnings:
The app config key files/watermark_enabled is not defined
The user config key files/quota is not defined
Multiple container deprecation warnings:
OCP\IServerContainer is deprecated
Not found:
No level:3 (error) or level:4 (fatal)
No exception or stack trace for the failing PUT

Key conclusions so far
HTTP 500 happens only on WebDAV PUT
Apache and PHP-FPM show no errors
Nextcloud logs show no error-level entries for the failing request
Storage, DB, and cache appear consistent
Indicates a silent internal Nextcloud failure during upload handling
