Enable column selection #1439

It would be great to have a key combination -such as holding Shift+Alt in VSCode, Notepad++ and others- to enable column selection.
It would improve a lot the coding experience. I.e., when doing code block indentation -which is a key feature in languages like python.
I have read something about a smart indent feature implementation but that was 4 years ago. Is there any progress on this one?
