Is a new BigCommerce channel necessary? #2227

Hi everyone,

we're currently trying to get started with Catalyst and an existing BigCommerce store which is using the Stencil storefront template.

We're a bit reluctant to create a new channel for Catalyst as a lot of logic is attached to the default channel (product sync, analytics etc.). The docs basically start with creating a new channel so it seems to be pretty mandatory?

I did create a new channel using the Catalyst one-click-starter and then changed the channel id to 1 in the env file. So far it seems to be working fine? Maybe someone can chime in with some more information.

It should be fine using channel 1, I know we have other customers doing the same. However, I know there is a lot of pitfalls using a different channel like you mentioned among other things, but we still recommend using a secondary channel for Catalyst as that's the architecture and direction we want to improve.
