Hey, I wanted to play with this. I found the "P" command in the help but when in the bins menu, nothing happens when I press P.

Am I doing something wrong? @andymai

My asumption is tha tit will lets me set section of the bin to be different colors,

Thanks @gavinmcfall — and sorry for the slow follow-up on these.

Lid color: you're right, the lid wasn't picking up its colour in the preview. The exporter was already painting the lid object the lid colour, but the 3D preview rendered it in the body colour, so the two disagreed. Fixed in #2286 — the preview now paints the lid its zone colour. It'll be in the next release (hard-refresh once it ships).

The other three are separate from the lid and I'm still working through them:

  • Label tab shows body colour (changing the label-tab colour only recolours the supports underneath)
  • Scoop top is body colour instead of scoop colour
  • Lip colour not consistent all the way around

These look like the...

@gavinmcfall No, you're right that's a bug where that keyboard shortcut isn't hooked up.

Could you elaborate on what you're trying to do?

The fix would allow you to place multiple bins of the same size in a layout. Now that I think about it, the word "stamp" might be better.

But I'm curious about your coloring bins thinking. I am working on a multi-color bin panel in the bin designer.

I think from an organization perspective it would be good to be able to paint/mark as different filament zones
In a slicer like Bambu studios for example if I import a 3MF of a articulating dragon I can set the colorzones

For Bin organization you might want to colour the top of the bins

Electronics maker

Red lip — power-related parts: JST leads, switches, fuses, battery connectors
Blue lip — signal/data: Dupont wires, headers, sensors, logic boards
Yellow lip — LEDs, indicators, displays
Black lip — heat-shrink, cable ties, sleeving, wire management

3D printer tinkerer

Orange lip — hotend/nozzle parts
Purple lip — bed/probing parts
Green lip — filament samples, clips, dry-box fittings
Grey lip — general spares: screws, nuts, washers

RC hobbyist

Red lip — drivetrain: gears, pinions, shafts
Blue lip — electronics: ESC plugs, servo horns, receiver parts
Green lip — suspension: springs, shims, arms
White lip — body clips, decals, cosmetic hardware

Dual-color lip examples

These work well when one color is the category and the second color is the status/type.

Red + Black lip
Power parts that are high-current or battery-related.
Example: XT60 connectors, battery straps, fuse holders.

Blue + White lip
Data/signal parts that are clean/precision electronics.
Example: sensors, microcontroller headers, I2C boards.

Orange + Silver lip
Hotend parts that are metal or heat-zone components.
Example: nozzles, heat breaks, heater blocks.

Green + Yellow lip
Consumables or "use often" maintenance items.
Example: PTFE tube, grease, spare blades, nozzle cleaners.

Purple + Black lip
Rare/specialty parts.
Example: weird adapters, custom brackets, one-off printed jigs.

Triple-color lip examples

Triple colors are good when you want a "readable code" across the top edge.

Red + Black + Yellow
"Danger / power / heat."
Good for batteries, high-current connectors, soldering tips, heater cartridges.

Blue + White + Silver
"Electronics / precision / small parts."
Good for sensor kits, tiny screws, jumpers, calibration tools.

Orange + Grey + Black
"3D printer mechanical/hotend service."
Good for nozzles, fans, grub screws, thermistors, hotend spares.

Green + Brown + Tan
"Woodworking / natural materials / finishing."
Good for dowels, sanding discs, stains, waxes, small joinery hardware.

Pink + Purple + White
"Cosmetic/detail/final finish."
Good for decals, labels, paint pens, model detailing, small aesthetic parts.

A nice system

Use the main lip color for the broad category, then use extra stripes for meaning:

First color: category
Second color: material or system
Third color: priority/status

Example:

Blue + Black + Red
Electronics → cable/wiring → critical power parts

Orange + Silver + White
3D printer → metal hotend parts → clean/new spares

Green + Grey + Yellow
Maintenance → general tools → frequently used

Possibly multiple zones too

@gavinmcfall Github is best for me. Thx for your help and feedback. Would you mind giving the latest multi-color export a spin?

Words pretty well, are the "Label tabs" supposed to be the supports or the actual horizontal piece?

Also I dont see an option for lid coloring. That might come later?

Importing the file with the lid I see this in Bambu studio initially

Clicking okay brings in the model stack on top of each other (though you can them move the lid out of the way

Couple observations. The main body and lid share the same colour
There is a third color selector for some reason even though the export only had 2. Not sure why
The colour for the stacking lip on https://gridfinitylayouttool.com/designer?id=design_1778829484129_kzsurp doesn't match whats in the slicer

This was great feedback! Wanna give it another spin?

  • The label tab is body colour, when changing the label tab colour it just changes the faces of the supports under the label tab
  • Lid isn't getting colour
  • Scoop is not the same colour at the top as it is at the bottom (top is sharing body colour)
  • This lip on top is not same colour all the way around

Some weirdness still

Top of the scoop is body colour not scoop color

These look like the per-part colour tags not fully covering those surfaces — faces created where a feature is booleaned into the body don't always inherit that part's tag, so they fall back to body colour. I'll dig into each and follow up here.

Thanks again for the detailed testing — the screenshots make these much easier to chase down.

Update on the multi-color parts:

Fixed (lands next release):

Shelving for now (known limitation):

  • Scoop top showing body colour, and the lip colour while live-editing (draft preview). Both come from how the geometry kernel attributes faces where a feature blends into the body wall — the scoop ramp's upper surface gets re-tagged to the (uncoloured) wall during the boolean. I tried several fixes, including a kernel-level change, but couldn't land a clean one without risking other geometry. Since it's purely a colour preview/3MF issue (the printed part is unaffected), I'm leaving it rather than ship something fragile. Noted for a future pass.

Thanks again @gavinmcfall — the lid and label-tab fixes came straight out of your testing.

Great work @andymai !!

I did some testing and those issues appear to be fixed!

Couple things I found odd, could be me or just an oddity of Bambu studio

  • There seems to be bits there its slides some red into th black in the corners, like they arent cliean lines
  • There are these white lines showing all over the place
2026年06月20日 19_38_12-Nerdz_Bin_1x1x4U_10mm-Label_Lidded_1x1x4_label - BambuStudio

Improvements if reasonable

  • For the stacking colour, any chance we could get it two colours? strech goal for four? (though that would be slow to print) and that at this point im just being greedy 😁

Tried Firefox and Chrome
When ticking "Split into color zones" it throws you to the bottom of the page into this cray zone

One other thing that is odd, there is a large vertical scroll instead like the site isnt pinning to the screen dimensions. Can you make the top menu and left meny stay in place, not sure why the whole page has scroll

Will design up some bins to match my scheme in the next few days and print them to show

Also some weird Geometry happening with the finger scoop

These vertical triangled showing up when you add the finger scoop and it seems to not be meshing right
