In Edit mode when you write a task as - [ ] there's no highlighting, but when you put an x inside the x gets highlighted but the brackets dissappear. This is counter-intuitive because in preview mode it still shows the [ ] in either case. I think once the structure is recognized, the [ ] should be kept in the edit mode preview in both cases, be highlighted in both cases, and just have the - hide itself.
