Regarding the future of UniGetUI #4444

Regarding the future of UniGetUI
Hello,
I have to announce that, from now on, I will not be in charge of developing and maintaining UniGetUI anymore. Devolutions Inc., a Canadian software company, will replace me, and will be in charge of keeping this project alive.
As you may already know, UniGetUI is a side-project I have been developing in my free time. However, nowadays I don’t have as much free time as I had when I started this project. The number of people using UniGetUI has been increasing non-stop (we recently hit 300.000 monthly active users, an all-time maximum). Nevertheless, having more users means I need to invest more time into UniGetUI, and I just can’t keep up.
Therefore, I am very proud to announce that, starting from today, Devolutions Inc. will take over UniGetUI.
The fact that UniGetUI is now owned by Devolutions Inc., does not mean that UniGetUI will stop working as it does today, nor will it not become paid/freemium. UniGetUI will remain Free and Open Source.
The migration process will be transparent for everyone. This repository will be transferred to their organization, and the new official web site will be https://devolutions.net/unigetui/ instead of the old https://marticliment.com/unigetui/. The only noticeable difference will be that, instead of some random university student, the team behind UniGetUI will now have the knowledge, resources and time needed to be able to deliver a solid product.
It has been a pleasure to create and bring UniGetUI to what it has become. I am also very proud to see that I have been able to sell what started as a side project. And I know for sure that the team at Devolutions will do an amazing job with UniGetUI.
You can check their blog post explaining the acquisition here: https://devolutions.net/blog/2026/03/unigetui-enters-its-next-chapter-with-devolutions/
Thank you for everything,
Martí Climent

Thank you so much for your amazing work. UniGetUI is one of the best apps available on Windows and is the first thing I install on a new system. I'm glad that you've found a company that you trust to carry on with your project. All the best with the future!

You certainly earned it Martí Climent (@marticliment), well done! I would not so readily say such if it were not true that the project will remain open-source and under the MIT licence. Very glad to hear it. Let's hope the new stewards will keep their word; all too often these things go sideways at best. Thank you for you efforts, and good luck with your future projects!

Thank you Marti, I just discovered and started using UniGetUI and in love with it. It is the first thing I open up when I start up my machine. 💖

Congratulations, Martí, and thank you for the amazing work you’ve done with UniGetUI. It’s impressive what you built, and I’m really glad to see the project continue in good hands while remaining free and open source.
One question: will current UniGetUI installs auto-update to the new Devolutions-branded v2026.1.0 release, or is a manual update/reinstall required?

After seeing this AI slop announcement, the future looks bleak...
Can the people at devolutions not even write an announcement without using AI?

Hi Martí and the Devolutions team,
First of all, thank you Martí for everything you've built — UniGetUI is truly an amazing project.
As a translator contributing to the Italian localization, I'd like to ask: what will happen to the translation workflow going forward?
Specifically:
Will translations still be managed via the current JSON files in the repository?
Is there a plan to migrate to a dedicated localization platform (e.g. Weblate, Crowdin, Transifex)?
Will existing translators be able to continue contributing in the same way?
Thanks in advance for any clarification!

Not only translations are now made by AI. When looking at their agents tool chain It seems also future development is made by AI at Devolutions. No wonder the first releases were broken.
oh
yeah good i downloaded the last proper release, ain't updating past it

Hi - sorry about seeing this specific thread late, I have been mostly monitoring GitHub issues in the past few days. I have created a separate discussion regarding translations in UniGetUI moving forward, feel free to chime in: #4510

No one is going to create pull requests, when there were approved people with an platform of exact changes, without any AI slop, which is now murked in with the real native texts, while there is no way to even compare the original texts, as they were Spanish/Catalonian/English based. There is a reason why „tolgge/crowdin/weblate" and more exist, „GitHub" is not an translation platform and replacing with AI is even worse.

Noted. I'm not ruling out re-introducing a platform like tolgee in the future, but for the short term, I either needed to migrate and onboard tolgee as a translation platform, or replace it with something else quickly to avoid having contributions that wouldn't get integrated. My goal is really to have 100% coverage, even if some translations are inaccurate

Appreciating Martí and UniGetUI, UniGetUI is the BEST app management software with a UI that I've ever used.

Hi Martí,
Thank you for your work. I’m sorry to hear that you are stepping out of this amazing project. About Devolutions Inc., I have to say I’m honestly disappointed to see how translations are being handled now. The statement that all supported languages are "100% complete with AI" feels misleading, especially since community contributions were never fully credited.
From what I can see, there haven’t been commits reflecting the actual maintenance or improvement of translations since my contributions, yet the project now presents itself as fully complete. This gives users the impression of accuracy and polish that doesn’t match reality, while erasing the work human translators invested.
Translation is not just about filling in strings to hit a number. It requires context, consistency, and care, things contributors put in and deserve recognition for. I hope they will reconsider how contributors are credited and how these changes are communicated publicly.
Best regards,
Luca Crăciun
Update: They finally added the credits to our work.

Congratulations Martí! Unfortunately I can't say I'm all that interested in riding out the stereotypical honest-OSS-to-enterprise-slop pipeline. The "its not this, it is that," and em-dash AI regurgitation in the press release are setting even lower expectations than the usual commercialization/crapification process. Will be searching for a fork and if one can't be found, returning to the winget command line. Was great while it lasted!

Actually that AI vomit isn't the press release but the blog post.
The actual press release has corp speak vomit instead: https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/03/10/3253012/0/en/Devolutions-Acquires-UniGetUI-Strengthening-Security-and-Enterprise-Readiness.html

I saw the new icon today, then I saw the announcement. The new icon is already bothering me, it's a downgrade for sure. I really hope it's not a sign for things to come, especially after the response here: #4832
I know it's a small thing, but I think these matter too and I saw too many corporate acquired projects go the wrong way too many times. At least with open source there's always a possibility for a fork.
But anyway we understand, that it's not easy to maintain a big project like this. Thank you for your work, you made something really special and sorely needed for this ecosystem. All the best in your future endeavours!

The icon Martí had was 100% recognizable and worked well on both light and dark themes; I don't know what led you to change it for one that you clearly didn't test enough. I use a dark theme on my Windows 11, and this current icon, especially when it has a white border, looks like a gift package like the ones that come in the applications that spam users so much these days. My first impulse upon seeing that icon in my taskbar is to look for the context menu to close it and open my antivirus to see what malware slipped in.

We've received a lot of feedback about the new icon, one adjustment we've already made that will go in the next release is that we've removed the white halo around the icon, and made it take all the available space. It should look better with that change

Sounds good. Icon won't make or break the app but it's a fun touch

Thanks for all your hard work, guys. Welp, time to start hunting for other open-source alternatives now. Silver lining though— at least itdidn't get sold to one of those data-mining companies looking to make a quick buck.

UnigetUI would not be here, would not be so highly regarded in the community if you were just "random university student". Thank you Martí Climent (@marticliment) for all your work, dedication and keeping this project active, growing and being the tool it is today.
First time hearing about Devolutions and I am rather sceptic, especially that few already voiced their concerns above...but I really, REALLY hope thy will prove me wrong..
