There are real reasons that I recommended the versions I did. 
Specifically there are bugs in earlier binutils versions that cause bad 
code to be generated with libgcj on mips[el]-linux. Also there was a 
tremendous amount of work improving the mips port of GCC and GCJ and 
libgcj in 4.3. It does not make sense to me to not take advantage of it.
You can try older versions if you wish, but be prepared to get friendly 
with gdb.
