Optimization breaks application

Hello list
I run into a problem with the gcj 4.2 branch that surprises me:
If I compile a java application with -O1 or with -O2, the application 
doesn't work properly. If I omit optimization or use -O3, it works as 
expected.
Before I try to minimize the problem; Is it a common problem that 
optimization might break applications? Is this then more a thing to 
discuss on the GCC or on the GCJ list?
