Several things:
1) It is normal for there to be many attempts (and failures) to find any 
given shared object. The important thing is that in the end it is 
found. I didn't see any missing library problems in a cursory glance at 
the strace dump.
2) I have had very bad luck using strace with gcj/libgcj. It changes 
program behavior for the worse.
3) If you want to debug libgcj, gdb is your best bet.
