Static executables

Hi,
I apologize in advance if my question is redundant or stupid, I'm just
an occasional gcj user, but I did try to read the archives and couldn't
figure out the final status quo...
The question is: is it possible to build static binaries on Linux/BSD,
and if yes, what is the right incantation to do this, for input files
consisting of a mix of *.java, *.jar, and JNI *.o objects? Eg. if I'm
using Fedora Core 4, which sports gcc 4.0.2, whenever I try to pass the
-static flag, the compiler complains that static compilation is not
supported.
Now, which one does it mean:
* it's not supported, because it's broken in (nearly) every case
* it's not supported, because it's broken in some well-defined cases
* it's not supported, because I'm missing some packages
* ... ?
Any help appreciated!
