I'm answering my own question re open source sound.
Earlier response from Tom Tromey:
FWIW I've gotten actual sounds to play using gcj 4.1, Tritonus, and a
little command-line audio playing program from jsresources.org. It
seemed a bit flaky, but it did work.
Pointing me to Tritonus, etc.
I may also be able to exec() a small "flite/festival" executable that I
pipe text to and just avoid Java-sound entirely while still having
sound in my app.
