It works fine for me with my unmodified 4.0 build.

This message is missing the name of the toolkit. So, it sounds like
the --enable-java-awt=gtk didn't take for some reason. If you look
at <build>/gnu/classpath/Configuration.java, the
default_awt_peer_toolkit should be set to something gtk-ish...
I don't know what could have gone wrong here.

Nope. Tom F. has talked about making this change on the trunk,
though, since it will make working on AWT and Swing simpler.
